Hello group,
I downloaded zipslack.zip.
I have a removable drive D:, and I unzipped it into that drive.
I have downloaded many speakup files and I have put them into the d:\linux
directory.
This harddrive is a little over 200MB.
I am using a DECtalk express on Comm1.
I also edited the linux.bat file to have one of the lines to read:
d:\linux\loadlin
I rebooted into DOS and ran linux.bat and it ran for a few seconds, and it
may have been ready to work, but I could not know what was on the screen.
Question:
How do I tell it to recognize the DECtalk on Com1?
I hope I do not have to use sighted assistance to get this going.
I look forward to any input.

Hi, if you have an old dos screen reader such as Jaws For Dos or Vocal Eyes
you can load that before running loadlin and that usually worked in getting
error messages
spoken. However, if it is a kernel panic error of some kind or an error
encountered after your machine loads Linux you will need to get those errors
with sited assistance assuming that Speakup hasn't loaded.

Hi, I think freedom scientific still has a copy of the Jaws for Dos
shareware on their site. If not I'll send you a copy of the shareware
version, and it might help solve the zipspeak problem.

Hi
Its not clear what version of ZipSpeak your using? What Speakup files did
you download and put in your d:\Linux directory? If your batch file only
contains the lines you disclosed then it will need a little more than that
to work.
Surely you'll need something like:
loadlin dectlk root=/dev/hdb1 ro
Give us more info and we'll get you up and running.

hi all,
is the file system type the same for playing
audio cds as it is for computer file related cds?
i can mount my slackware cd but not an audio cd.
i am sure that i am doing a lot of guessing here about all of this.
i have tried to use workbone but i am getting input errors

You don't need to mount audio CDs to play them. In fact, I don't think
there is any way to mount them. Just use a tool like workbone that comes
with Slackware, or any other CD player. You may have to set the device
that contains your CDROM (like /dev/hdc) to 666 permissions, but it
depends on the player, I think. Like I said, no need to mount audio CDs.

i checked all of my levels in alsamixer and they all are 100%
workbone acts like it is playing the cd
it counts up the tracks
but there is no audio,
i wonder if my cdrom that is built in to this computer is only a cdrom for
computer files?
are there any test that i can do to figure out what my problem is?

No, audio and computer cds are not the same.
Files reside on the iso filesystem.
Audio cds are just that.
They're raw audio with some data burned on to a cd, and they're not on a filesystem.

well that explanes why it would not mount! lol!
i am very green to playing audio cds i never have got any to play on this
computer
workbone acts like it is counting up
but i am not getting any audio.
in alsamixer i set everything to 100%
as the cd was playing i went in to alsamixer and adjusted all of the
levels but still could not get any audio.
also i have the program cdparanoia,
it reports that it can't read the cedrom for some reason.
so is there anyway of checking for problems that you know of?

Hi, well, you don't need to mount audio cd's to play them. The cd player
will mount them itself.
You may have to check a couple of things here to se why cd's are not
playing. First,c check all your mixer settings and test your sound card with
a wav file, mp3,or something like that.
Secondly, check to make sure your cdrom is connected to your sound card by a
audio cable. If this cable is loose or disconnected it will be the reason
for no sound.
Then, if all is well start workbone and I believe you would
press the 6 or 7 number key to start playing a cd.
