Reading that error message suggests to me that either you have a failing
floppy drive or that you have a corrupt copy of the root disk.  The first
thing I'd try is rewriting the root disk on a different floppy.   The fact
that it took a long time to come up talking also makes me wonder about
that floppy drive.  I know I recently had to replace a floppy drive
because it absolutely refused to format floppies and attempts to create
disks with Rawrite always resulted in corrupt disks.  After replacing the
drive, the problems went away.  Good luck.

Yeah, I had downloaded a copy of the windows version of rawrite but did
not try it yet.
I'll create my Boot and Roots floppies using that version this time.

Mandrake 8.1 problem

Hi All,

New to the list, have been running Emacspeak but want to try
speakup.
I have the sources for kernel 2.4.8
I downloaded the speakup 1.0 tarball and unzipped it in
/usr/src
I ran install and it did it's think, some hunk fails for non
386 systems.
I ran 
make mrproper
make config
make dep
make bzImage
make modules

I answered yes to the speakup config and choice the ltlk
synth and set it as default.
it compiled with some errors for the speakup.
Never created a bzImage file in
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot

Is there something about Mandrake that is different?
Did I leave out or do something I shouldn't have?
did not run 
make modules_install yet.

Any help appreciated.

Hi, I got the same problems when trying to build my own Speakup kernels for
Mandrake 8.1.
I solved it by download the kernel sources from kernel.org, and used that.
As to your question Mandrake makes propriatary  changes to there kernel
sources.
So I tend to get generic kernel sources, and that works fine.

The GPL wouldn't allow that, so I'm pretty sure that Mandrake doesn't make 
proprietary changes to the kernel.  I imagine that Mandrake patches their 
version of the kernel in order to support extra hardware much as RedHat 
does.  It's a shame that you didn't stick with it and post Speakup enabled 
MDK RPMs for those wishing to try out that distro.

Hi, if I could get the Mandrake source tree to build without errors I would.
Well, I guess propriatary wasn't the right word. What I really should have
said is Mandrake only enhancements such as drivers, processor optimization,
and all sorts of other things.
However, Mandrake comes with some pretty cool stuff. I would be happy to try
and make a talking Mandrake distribution with someones guidance.

I would start by getting a complete kernel package from ftp.kernel.org. In
the past some distributions have left portions of the kernel package out
of their sources. This doesn't give most people a problem, but has given
some speakup users problems. I won't pretend to remember the exact nature
of these problems. I never really knew the extent anyway.

Try downloading a stable kernel and patching it. That is a good place to
start.

Last time I checked, ftp.kernel.org was down due to hardware problems. You may want to try a mirror instead. If you are in the US try:

I am running 2.4.17 right now, but the latest kernel on that mirror is 2.4.16. Btw, does anyone know when 2.4.18 is scheduled to come out?

Hi, Bill. Could you give me advice on how to build a speakup distribution of
Mandrake?

I am not sure how well the install will talk. I was able to instal v7.2 and
v8.0 alright with speech, but anaconda insists on going gui for the install
for v8.1.
I guess what it comes down to if you can tell me what I need, and some
directions, on how to modify the disks to make them speech enabled I will
certainly give it a shot.

Hi Ron:

first off, I do recommend using regular kernel trees, like everyone else
has recommended.  However, I'd like to know the error message.  Usually if
patching custom trees with speakup is going to fail, something crucial will
fail to patch and that's that.  the fact that all x86 patches worked and it
then failed to compile is curious and  I for one would like to know what
failed.

Ahh, but are we sure the patch didn't fail? I have seen patches fail, but
the original error message burried deep, and the final message not clear
about the failure.

Thanks.  I'll try creating new copies of both the boot and root disks
with different floppies.  I create the disks on a different computer and
the floppy on that computer is not bad at all.  But I have no idea about
the destination (future Linux) box.

Well I reluctantly got some sighted assistance to see what my problem is
during the install.  The boot disk took 4 minutes 34 seconds to get to
the root floppy install prompt.  My Doubletalk LT did not start talking
until the prompt appeared and then it read all of the messages up to the
prompt.
I installed the root floppy and pressed enter and got the following
results.

vfs: mounted root (minix file system) read only.

this out.  Right now Windows is still installed on the computer so could
I find that info out in the Device Manager or something?
I am going to try making new floppies first and I will post how that
