What is the .dat file format?  I noticed the attachment and my windows 
computer does not recognize the file format.  It might be one of those 
ms-word formats that I do not have my word configured for.  I hope to have 
my Linux pine email client going sometime this weekend and so if it is a 
Lunix format of some flavor, then fine then.

The winmail.dat file is m$ electronic business card. So far nobody has
come up with any exploit to ruin the address book. It contains extended
information allowing a person to transmit complete contact information for
the event that another winblows user adds them to the address book.

Generally when m$ uses the extension .dat it is a bianary format that uses
a tree structure for storage. For more complete information look up
information on the format of the registry. That is the largest example of
the format. HAving said this, it doesn't always hold true.

I wanted to add after reading other comments:
1) You will never see this attachment inside a m$ mail program.
2) The file was never designed to be opened per se.
3) The file was dropped from being sent out over the black eye from users
of other programs.
4) The file could have originated from one of the following:
	a m$ exchange server
	outlook
	outlook express
	windows messaging client
	exchange server client
5) The best thing is to simply ignore the attachment and go on with life.
6) If you are inclined, you could put the person into a list of targets
for your next virus distribution since they most likely use crappy
macroslop products.

no, of course not but if I know what the file extension is in the first
place, as well as whether or not it can be rendered executable, then it's
probably harmless.   If I don't recognize it then yes, I likely won't go
near it.
