Hi Peter. Glad you can join the list and feel free to jump in at any
time. Everyone here is very friendly and helpful. I've learned a lot
from reading and asking this list. I wish that at 16 I would have known
how to be a webmaster and a technician, hehehe, but at 16 I was playing
apple 2e games with my good old texttalker card. I have a laptop with a
dual boot setup, the primary boot is into slackware linux and the
secondary boot is into windows 2000 professional so it can be done. One
thing to decide about linux is which distribution to go with when you
decide to install. All are good, some are better for one while others are
better for other people. I personally have always liked slackware and
debian the best. Others on this list use redhat and a few others I
imagine.
Best regards

Heh, seems that Bill and I aren't the only ones who like Red Hat.
The downloads come from all over the net on our servers for the Red Hat
speakup cds.
Also will start working on boot disks for debian today so will have boot
floppies for woody out sometime next week for all the debian junkies.

Hey Tom
I am interested in helping if you need it. I am looking forward to
official woody cdimages. Trying to make them from packages proved to be
extremely difficult. It always bothered me about my mirror being
corrupted.

Peter, are you looking to install with speech? If so, the question is
about where you got the Redhat. If off one of the official mirrors, it
doesn't come with speech. If you want a Redhat with speakup already in it,
use anonymous ftp to speakup.octothorp.org and download from there. At
least goot a boot floppy image to get going--though you really should get
the entire disk1 iso image, at least.
Of course, you can always compile speakup in after the fact. But, if you
need to rely on speech, it's easier to get the speakup enabled Redhat up
front.

Also a plug for my download site for Red Hat speakup cd iamges so that
people don't suck up all Bill's pipe.
198.172.228.165 /pub/linux/rh7.1
Have boot disks and cd images there.
Also for live network installs if you do http://198.172.228.165/rh7.1 you
can install that way too with speakup.

I haven't looked on this ftp site but are there different archives for
different speech synthesizers? Seems the only way to have a speaking
install of redhat with speakup is to have it configured to work with the
type of synthesizer one is using???
Guess will go on a hunt to see for myself! ha! - Amanda Lee

Amanda:
The way you suggest is certainly one way to do it, but it would bulk up
the download.
Instead, you have to specify your synth at the first prompt--the one and
only prompt that doesn't speak. Here's how it works:
Start the install and listen/feel your drive activity. When it stops type:
text speakup_synth=[your.synth.keyword]
Replace [your.synth.keyword] with the appropriate synthesizer designator:
dtlk for the internal doubletalk
ltlk for the external litetalk and external doubletalk
bns for a blazie device like the braille 'n speak
dectlk for a dectalk express
decext for the external dec talk (not the express)
acntsa for the accent sa
apolo for the apollo (yes, it's mis-spelled)
audptr for the audaptor
spkout for the speak out
txp for the artic transport

Excellent Janina, I have notepad open here and am compiling my cheat
sheet.
I just don't know that I will be able to download CD images in my
lifetime at 56K for now! Trying to get DSL but that's another story.
Have plenty of CDR burning capability at home but no broad band connection
at this point.
I'm planning to go on vacation for a week. Wonder if I started a download
before I left if it would be finished in time when I get home hahaha!
650MB being the average to fillup a 74 minute CD, Yeah could happen.
Thanks! - Amanda

If Tommy likes I can associate a host off asmodean.net to point to that
address maybe like linux.asmodean.net or something, that way one need not
remember an IP address.

There are mainly a few key files difference between the speakup enabled
and the default distros. You could really take care of it
iteratively--it's just easier not to have to.
Essentially, you really only need the speech enabled floppy disk image to
boot your system. That will give you a speaking insta..
Next, you need the kernels with speakup--not a small download, but much
more manageable over 56K. This will get your system talking when you boot.
Lastly, you need the speakup enabled keyboard--forget the exact
filename--loadkeys, something like that.
I'm sure someone will fill in here. It's probably a good short list to put
up for folks who can't handle the megadownloads.

Does your laptop boot cd roms?
Is this feature possibly disabled in CMOS?
In any case:
There'll be a directory on the CD ROM called images. In there you'll find
a file called boot.img. That's the floppy disk image. You need to create a
floppy using this image.
To create a floppy using boot.img as the source image file, go to a DOS
session. On the same CD ROM there's another directory called dosutils. In
there, there's an executable called rawrite.exe This is for creating
floppy disks under DOS.
Caution: Turn off your screen reader while rawrite is creating a floppy.
You may need to run it once just to get a sense of when you should turn
your screen reader off, but you should turn it off or you run the risk of
creating a bad floppy--one that's corrupted. So, waste one, but pay
attention. Essentially, you need to answer two questions, where's the
image you want to use, and where should it write it (A: for example).

Actually I've downloaded plenty of cd images over my modem. Its not pretty
but if you let it go you can get one in about 35 hours or so.
If you don't watn ot take that way downloading while you sleep is antoehr
good option or download while your at work or a bit of both.
Some people say I'm crazy for doing this but oh well.

Yeah I know, I was working out the math to get the cat sitter to startup a
new download between her visits ha!
Wow! I had figured on about 2 and a half days per CD so hey now! 35 hours
per image! ain't all bad! The only down side to this is if you loose the
modem connection and have to start all overagain. I sure did like the
resume feature in zmodem back in the dos days.
I'm happy to say that a kind person has been gracious enough to burn some
CDs. Once I have these, in the future, will be glad to pass on the favor
to others but don't everybody line-up just yet!

What's this? "Resume in the old dos days!"
Of course we have zmodem; but then again we have things that are better.
Many sites that let you download cd images also support rsync and if you run that
in partial mode you can resume where you left off.
Getright and gozilla and other download managers also support resume for ftp and http
1.1 downloads so even if you are using the evil OS
all is not lost.
Here in Australia a set of say Debian cds costs me $11. That's a 3 cd
set so we're looking at aprox $4 per cd. I talk
in Australian currency. This is so damn cheap
you just lash out and buy a set rather than spending 105 hours
downloading 3 cds worth.
Many of our isps impose a bandwidth cap; Telstra cable for
example (which I don't have) sets a 3gig cap
on transferrs per month.
Also; some drives can have trouble with burnt cds from some manifacturers, and
pressed cds seem to read faster in most drives anyway.
They are also more resistant to heat light etc.
Cd burning is cool and I do plenty of it;
but when Linux cds are so cheap I do my bit to not conjest tje met amd biu sp,e/
Some projects like freebsd etc also get revenue from cd sales.
Regards, Kerry.

Welcome aboard Peter. I'm sure you'll get some answers if you need
them. Let me suggest a really good site for information. This site
contains lots of documentation on many many aspects of Linux and
applications.
http://www.linuxdocs.org
Enjoy and good luck.

Janina:
I was trying to do that on a set of CD's i created with the ISO images that
i downlaoded at a friends house in boston. The rawrite program was trying
to create a boot.img diskette, but it said that there was a pproblem while
trying to extract that image.
Now, Charlie downloaded the same exact ISO files, and i will try to create
the bootable diskette, tommorrow, because today i forgot the CD's at the
ACB office..

I got all 3 slackware cds at 56k.
I went overnight from 10p-6a, and during the weekends.
It took about a week and a half or maybe 2, don't recall now.

There are other programns that anyone can download for free.
What these programs do is if your pdial up connection has been
disconnected, it will resume the download after the next ttime you reconnect.
I'm not exactly sure if these programs are available for linux. But for
windows they are,
Two programs that I know of, and that work very well at pausing and
resuming file downloads are :
Get Right
and
Download Accellerator

If you use ftp under Linux, simply do reget instead of get and the filename.

Hi,
If your laptop happens to be a late model Toshiba, you can hit the C
key just after powering on. It sounds like you have made the necessary
space on your HDD to install Linux, although you didn't say how much.
Once you start the installation procedure, you'll be presented with a
choice of fdisk or Disk Druid. Either will work. I use Disk Druid.
Any questions, call or write.

I went to speakup.octothorp.org and looked in the pub/redhat 7.1 directory and found there was nothing there.

Hi, Jim,
Sorry about that. It's fixed now. If you're brave, you can try
Roswell, the beta of Red Hat Linux 7.2.

Yes that is all enabled, and my laptop cd rom drive boots everything else.

Peter:
It may be necessary to shutdown to DOS rather than use a DOS session.
Worst case scenario is that I'll have my linux laptop tomorrow. We can dd
images directly within linux, if need be. Heck, if we have a hub, we can
just install over nfs or ftp from my laptop.

Of course we have such facility in linux. For me, I use ncftp. But there
are others.
Do not fear. Linux is no dessert.

Hi if you can't get CDs, you could just download 12 floppy images
and let the system install over the net. This is how I installed
Debian on my desktop system. At that time, I only had a 28K connection,
so the install took 8 hours. The nice thing about this is when the
modem lost connection, the system would re-connect and keep trying.

Amanda,
As I understand it, it is one size fits all.
When you start the install, you give the installation 2 parameters
firstly, you tell the installer that you want to use text mode.
secondly you tell the installer the type of synthesizer you want to use.
E.G.
text, speakup_synth=acntsa
would be the parameters for the accent sa
