yeah this may sound stupid, but until my dad can scrap together the money
he needs, what would make a nice speech emulator? all i have availibel is a
dectalk ll pc running on
a 386 and a null modem cable on
16450s , 2 pcs running windows.
i want to use one of those win boxes as a zipspeak box.
what synthasizer can i use that doesn't use handshaking? and that doesn't
use control characters if possible.
sorry for the extra l's but my l key sticks .
i have tried serial terminals buut they weren't my thing .
i want to try speakup and see what i can do with it.

Hi:
If you rule out handshaking and control chars then I think you rule out
just about any synth ever manufactured. Dec PC will be supportable in the
future but not yet.

you dont get my point. i want to use one of the supported synth
as the front end doing the emulation in dos , the apolloo seems to
work because
it doesh't use control chars. i can get it to speak through my decpc's
screen reader but i cant get it to stop sending that
@f8. and theirs no way of shutting it up.
i was hoping i could create another synthasizer driver for the deccpc
without handshaking, because
whenever i type com2 >com3 i can echo cmds to dtpc when i load
speakup it screws up my decpc same with emacspeak.
why would it screw it up.

Hi:
You're almost certainly not going to get satisfactory operation from this
type of setup. For a screen reader to work efficiently, it needs direct
access to the synth it's controling. This is why you can't get speakup to
shut up - it can't tell your dec pc to shut up.
I'd suggest using a terminal program on your dos box as that's about as
good as you'll be able to do until you get a supported synth or yours
becomes supported. I accessed my machine for 10 months this way before I
could use speakup. If you want to access multiple processes at once, you
can use the screen program to switch between them.

Can we drive an echo with speakup? They're pretty minimal.
I was meaning to write a synth emulator for a pc but never was bothered enough
I ended up buying a new synth. Hrmm I wonder if speakup
could drive a votrax; on second thoughts I recall how bad the hardware is.
If I go home for Christmas; writing a driver for it might result from the high
levels of bordem :-)

ok, i tried using the decext driver, and doing this at my dos box:
mode com2 9600,n,8,1
type com2 >com3
turned off screen reader before that.
i can get speech if i used my other linux box to "echo" commands to it,
but nothing comes out under speakup or emacspeak.
what is going on?
if its handshaking how do i disable it? i'm determined to make this work.
i have used serial terminals for a while and i don't like them that much
because of high baud rates on a
16450 really hurt.
does anyone know where i can get a double talk lt in canada? i want one,
for the cheapest price possible.

Hi:
One problem is probably that speakup can't get feedback from the synth,
which it uses to control it. My advice would be to invest in a 16550A UART
as either way, it will save you a lot of grief. I wouldn't be expecting
terrific performance form any serial devices without one.

only thing that has a 16550a is my modem. i can't switch the cards, dads
iliterate on computers.
is their a program that i can use to strip chars off input from a com port
and feed it to my synth? null modem to synth? thats my only option right now.
if i use a serial terminal, some programs dont redraw right.
and why does "type" exit when something from speakup is sent?
or something.
how will i simitaniusly redirrect stuff to the synth? it workks fine with
apollo o and a term but lhow to strip that @f8 and control chars i dont know.

Define some programs don't redraw properly. funnily enough I have been using
a copy of ms-kermit with vt220 terminal emulation for oh it must be 8 years
now with no problems.
Windows 95/3.11 telnet is not good enough to be driven by Linux; you need
ms-kermit ncsa telnet teraterm or crt
ms-kermit and ncsa-telnet run under dos.

is their a way i can make ms kermit send all the info to my synth?
via a script? where can i get it? i hate terminals if my linux box locks
up... bang!
i cant read thelast msgs on the sys console.
anyone want to help me make a generic synthasizer driver? that doesn't use
hand shaking? i could use it fine if it would work with the dos type
command to com2 to com3 . i would redir it on dos. o! forgot
abhout my terms capture capability, could try that. is it possible to
disable the apolo spasific commands and set it to send dectalk ones? or use
decext? i'll try a few things and give you the results,
i want to try to get as many synths in as i can. i think, but i am not
sure, that the braille blazer has a double talk lt in it.

Sorry, I am majorly confused here. Are you using speakup and working on
the console? Or are you telneting to a linux box via winblows?
I don't know how you think you can make a generic synth driver. Though not
an expert, all reader programs I know of use hardware specific
drivers. And do you have access to all the synths you want to use? Most of
us are too poor for that.

The blazer has an echo in it. It is not a doubletalk.
Just use a serial terminal. It works.
A generic synth driver is useless or close to useless hwo do you intend
to shut up the hardware? That'll get old real quick.
Linux since 2.2.0 supports a serial console. a serial console.
this means you get *all* messages bound for the serial console. Just use a
serial terminal and you'll see all there is to see.
Regards, Kerry.

Why? Why are you turning off the screen reader and using terminal
capture? What are you trying to accomplish and how are you going about
it? There may be a better way. (I really hope you are not trying to use
one synth on two PCs without so much as a A/B switch.)
