Hello, guys!
Is it possible to mount an ISO image as if it would be a CDROM drive? Say, I
downloaded the ISO image of CDROM installation of Slackware7.1. Can I install
from it without having to burn the CDROM?

Thanks,
Vic

Yeah, I think you can. what you do is just make a directory under / called
mnt2 or something like that and then mount the drive that the file is
on. After that make another directory called something like /iso and then
do something like this:
mount -o loop /mnt2/file.iso /iso
If this doesn't work, then you'll have ot burn the cd I think.

I've finally gotten AFB moving on replacing my defective sound card. I
asked them for an Ensoniq 1370 (which is what I have now) or an Ensoniq
1371, but our dealer doesn't have any of these. What's a good, under $150
or so, card to get instead--that's fully ALSA supported?

Thanks, gang.

Janina -
I recently installed an AWE/64 here which works great with the older
version of Alsa drivers (have not tried nthe newer versions). I believe I
paid about $60 for it.

Chuck.

Charles, does the AW64 provide any kind of digital I/O? It's not
essential, but I'd sure like to have that capibility. I realize this would
push the price.

My AWE64 card does not have digital I/O to my knowledge - just the usual
line in/out, mike, and speakers. There is a midi socket, but I have not
inquired about what goes in and out of it!
It is plug-and-play, which the Alsa drivers handle just fine.

The SB live Value works with the Alsa drivers I hear and that gives you
multiple digital output channels. I think they also support digital out
sp/diff or similar but you pay $$$ for digital in capability on a pc soundcard.

I would agree with Steve here, the sb live isn't a bad inexpensive
card. It has an spdif and the O.E.M. version is all you really need.

Hi Janina,
I am currently using an AWE-64 Gold with Linux and it works fine.
However, as far as I know the Alsa drivers don't support wavetable
synthesis, so in effect I have a SB-16. You'd probably be happier with
something like a SB Live. Its easier to set up a PCI sound card than one
running on ISA like my 64.

HiJim,
Have you tried loading sound fonts using the sfxload utility? Also,
drvmidi is a nice midi player.

I've ordered the Sound Blaster Live Platinum. It's a half-length PCI card
plus a drive bay unit that provides front panel jacks for interfacing
devices--including SPDIF in/out. So, I hope I'll be happy with
this! <grin> It seems to meet the various needs, and folks here seem
unanimous on the SB Live itself. Film at 11.
