I briefly got on to the Realnetworks site and I see that
they have realplayer8. Where do I get realplayer7 or does 8 also
work with trplayer?
By the way, a thousand thanks for making this available.

Martin,
First you go into the download link. Then, you need to page down until
you find something that says "download free realplayer 7 Beta". Then you
need to fill out a form with a few questions. When you get to the
platform, choose linux rpm.
I just reached that step myself, after first making the mistake of
downloading the self-extracting version.

What's wrong with the self-extracting version? I got it working, despite
the can't set x display if I run it directly, don't need that feature
anyway, as if it'd go in to x I wouldn't know how to get out.

Could someone send me the link for trplayer? I seem to have deleted the
message with the announcement.

When it says can't set display, it means it wants to start x-windows anduse
a graphical install, it plainly won't work unless you use x.

After finding more messages on this thread, I second the
idea of the tar ball. The X part seems to kill the
self-extracter, all right.

I got and installed trplayer-1.0.1. I also went to the
Realnetworks web site which is only slightly less fun than
slamming one's little finger in a car door or getting a root
canal.
I got the UNIX version of RealPlayer7 after filling out
the form to their satisfaction.
It is the self-extracting binary so I made it executable.
I get a "can't open display" error from the binary and that's
right about where things sit right now. This is a Debian system
and I have not yet included the sound support in the kernel, but
one would expect the extractor to act like it was extracting,
first. There, then, might be a complaint about there being no
sound support or maybe a crash, but it looks like the binary of
rp7 isn't extracting.
Here are some issues that might be important. I
downloaded the RealPlayer 7 binary to a different system than the
one it will reside on. After the successful download, I copied
the binary to the right system and uncompressed it.
I also shortened the name of the binary to make it easier
to remember in my short memory. If it looks at argv[0], then I
am in trouble.
I even logged in through the console and SU'd to root and
tried it from there and got the same results.
The trplayer executable is in /usr/local/bin, all ready
to go.

Some appologies for wasting everybody's time. I only do
that on purpose with spammers. After reading all the rest of the
messages regarding realplayer7, etc, maybe I should refrase my
question. What do I need to do on the realnetworks site to get
the correct player that will work with the latest trplayer?
Actually, I have a more immediate problem in that I
haven't yet finished configuring the Linux system I use for
sound, but the lack of anything much to do was one of the reasons
for my procrastination. Now, it looks like I really can do
something neat so I had better get going.

Bravo, Matt! And, thank you for making streaming audio easier to use and
enjoy. I know there will continue to be enhancements and improvements to
all of the Linux tools used by blind Linux users, but yours is one very
persuasive one. It further takes away anyone's remaining reasons to
struggle with older outmoded operating environments in the best possible
way--by providing a tool that's no more complicated to use than it has to
be to get the job done. Way to go, Matt!

Hi Matt!
Congratulations on the release of trplayer! It looks like a much needed
addition to the arsenal...
I have just implemented a "filter" to pull an http address out of a .pls
or .m3u file and pass it along to an mp3 player - I have been playing with
mpg123 since I cannot run freeamp on this system - and so I substituted
trplayer for mpg123 in my scripts. On the speakup audio page, I find that
trplayer works great on all the .ra and .ram links, and also on the
acbradio .pls link, but on Kirk's egoplay.pls link it is silent for a
while then gives up. Does that link work for you with trplayer? mpg123
will not handle it either, but gives sporadic bursts of sound until it too
gives up. My connection is a 33.6 dialup modem.
Chuck.

trplayer is a RealMedia player for Linux which has a text-based
interface instead of a graphical interface. This makes it fully
accessible to blind users and others who can't use the graphical user
interface or prefer the text interface. trplayer supports all media
formats supported by RealPlayer 7 (RealAudio, RealVIdeo, MP3, etc.).
In presentations which involve video and other visual media, trplayer
plays the audio and discards the rest.
trplayer is available for Linux and is a free download. The trplayer
home page is at:
http://www.linux-speakup.org/trplayer.html
You will also need RealPlayer 7 for Linux in order to use trplayer.
Enjoy,
