Hi guys, I replaced /root/.profile with a file off of another system and I
forgot to backup the original one.
Can anyone send me the one that comes with debian because dselect isn't
working like it should.

Hi:

Tommy, do you mean .bash_profile, or are you running ksh or something?  I
did not get a .profile installed, but I do have a .bash_jprofile.

Um, I'm using bash I think.
Should of been /root/.profile in there. Thanks. Maybe Kirk or Gene might

OK, so I'm trying to install Debian on my computer, and well, I think I'd
finish the install eventually (I've done manual workarounds for things that
don't quite go by themselves), except for a small problem. ... I keep
getting these errors and the computer completely locks. At least one time I
heard a "could not handle kernel paging request" error. ... And I'm not
really sure why. I thought I might have power management turned on, but I
don't. Only thing that I can think is wrong is a flaky system. I know, for
instance, the video card's a POS video card, and I'm going to replace that
straight away and try again. Also the network card could stand replacement,
but sometimes I get these errors before any of the network stuff gets
loaded. Any other ideas what might be causing this problem?

Particulars:

K6-2-300 system with 32MB RAM and a 2GB hard drive and Trident 4DWave sound
card; POS AGP video card, and POS NE2000 ISA ethernet card (on IRQ11 at
0x300).

BTW, there's no particular time that these errors happen, just kinda
whenever. ... 

Once I get that tackled, I'll try to get lilo to boot successfully off the
hard drive. ...

Buddy would be changing hardware in name of getting an OS to work. He had
problems with Winblows on that machine too.

Hi Buddy:  Hang on just a bit if you can.  Gene is trying a new set of
disks I cooked yesterday.  Hopefully, they may take care of some of
your problems.  Changing hardware is a bit drastic in the name of
getting a distro to work.

Buddy, what kind of cdrom do you have in the machine?  Do you have
anything connected to the parallel port?  I was getting similar kinds of
problems on my laptop, and discovered that I had a parallel cable that
was only partially connected.  If you can give me more specifics on the
kind of disk controller you have, maybe there is some other driver I
need to include in the kernel.

*Heh* That's true. The Windoz drivers for that card were completely flaky.
So I'm fairly well convinced that even in standard VGA mode, the video card
is at least somewhat responsible for any system stability problems. (It's a
SIS chip set, didn't cost me much. So no real problem to change it.

sure what the easiest way to find out would be. I actually tried to make a
kernel, copied it onto the rescue floppy, rdev'ed it to /dev/fd0

That's interesting.  Are you getting more or fewer errors with the
custom kernel?  Or have you noticed any difference at all?  Probably the
easiest way to find out which hard disk you have is to boot a dos disk
with msd.exe on it.  On the other hand, when you look at the output from
dmesg, you can tell what kind of hard disk you have.  As a matter of
fact, why don't you save the dmesg output in a file and send it to me. 
Maybe I can tell by looking at it if there's something I've left out of
the kernel.

Actually, I think I must've been doing something else when I told you I
tried a custom kernel with nearly all the IDE controllers in it. I did
make config
make bzImage
and then cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/compressed/bvmlinux /floppy/linux
Then
cd /floppy
rdev linux /dev/fd0

It didn't boot at all, so I re-made the root disk from the disk I got from
you. So I don't know if there were more or fewer. (BTW, I did the kernel
compile on the machine that works.)

Hi Buddy.  dmesg is the command you use to repeat your boot up messages.
 You can redirect the output to a file with the > symbol.  You can also
pipe it through more as in demsg | more.

The file you wanted after the make bzImage command is
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage.  Just copy the file to the linux
file name on your rescue floppy.  Then cd to the floppy directory and
rdev linux /dev/fd0.  Try customizing the kernel again, and see if you
don't have better luck.

Oh. D'oh! Well no wonder it didn't work. OK, I'll try that instead. Yeah,
knew about redirection and pipes, but didn't know about dmesg...after a
year, there's still so much to learn yet. I'll try my custom kernel (which
I still have) and see what happens.

If Debian kernels or kernels are pannicing during the install phase my first
bet is bad ram. If the ram is under waranty replace it or if you want to be
sure then ram test the box with memtest86 2.x and have something on com1 so you
can control the memtest and read the screen. memtest86 the newer versions
(see freshmeat binaries writable to disk are available) dumps to the serial port
at 9600,n,8,1 (cool eh?)

If that isn't the case, it might be a bad board I've seen that too. 99.999%
of the time it isn't linux's fault that hardware falls over Linux does drive
things to their maximum capacity. If you drive a bomb arround the grand prix
track the tires might fall off. I'm not saying your computer is a bomb; it might
be that one part is letting the system down. Perhapse Windows blue screened
on the box every now and again but how often do we hit enter ignore the blue
screen and continue on? When Linux panicks it may be a random thing but should
not be ignored but investigated. Time and time again panicking kernels have shown
me marginal hardware. Thanks Linux <grin>

one (see the follow-up). So far it appears to run OK. ... Except lilo,
