trplayer and realplayer

I've got a stupid question, could someone please remind me how to make
binary files work with linux, I've done this before, but it's been a
while. I downloaded the realplayer file from the websight to install that,
 but don't remember how to install binaries. if someone could tell me how,
I'd appreciate it:p

Hi,

First, did you get a package such as "rpm"?  If yes, is source or
binary?  In the case of an i386 binary rpm, for instance, a command
like "rpm -i realplayer-x.y.i386.rpm" will install the package.  If
you get warnings about dependencies, go to a source like
http://www.rpmfind.net to find the missing pieces.

If you got sources (probably in a ".tar.gz" bundle),  put the package
into a directory (I like "/usr/src"), and type something like "tar
-zxf" <filename>.  The result will be a directory under the package.
In it will be, among other things, a file called "README" (case
important), which tells you how to proceed with the build.

The file name is 
rp7_linux_alpha_debianslink_cs2.bin
It came like this, with no directions on how the thing was to be
installed, and the realplayer websight didn't tell me much either when I
downloaded it. Unless I am reading the trplayer sight wrong I need
realplayer before I even try and install the trplayer

Oh, that's a Debian binary package.  Which distro do you use?  I found
Redhat packages for both on Matt Campbell's site.  You do need the
realplayer first.

all you need is the realplayer 8 libs which u can get from the speakup
ftp site.
ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/linux/goodies I think is the url.

of the ftp websight like shawn said. the readme file has no instructions
on how to install it at all. only thing I can really guess at, is that I
don't need to install anything then for it?

no. all you need to do is copy the libs to /usr/lib and then tar zxvf the
archive and you're set.
then install the trplayer binary and it's all done.

No, you don't need realplayer, you only need the realplayer libraries which are on linux-speakup.org, as are all the other things you need to get trplayer running.

Hi Shaun. I will be doing this thing with trplayer sometime in the future, so I figured I would try to clarify one point here. When you copy the libs to /usr/lib and the untar the trplayer archive, doesn't it create its own directory? Or does trplayer come in source? Because then your point about installing the binary makes sense, because you have to compile the source. But if it is just a binary, you should just be able to extract it from the archive and you can just run it from there? Just wanted to know whether or not the trplayer package was archived as source or as a binary.

The tar ball will create it's own directory. It is sources, so it needs to be compiled.

ok. here's the deal.
the trplayer package is a binary which is dynamicly linked to the
realplayer8 libs which u need to untar to your /usr/lib directory. the
libs are also pre compiled so u don't need to build any sources.
just unter the libs to /usr/lib and install the trplayer binary and then
issue this command.
trplayer http://your.favouritestream.here
and just sit back and relax.

a fake. the directory contains all u need to get going without much fuss.
no sources to worry about.
everything's precompiled.

Hi, you could just grab the rpm's off of Linux Speakup web site. However, as
for the .bin file that is an easy one.

Login as root, and do a chmod 755 on that .bin file, and then run the file
by typing ./filename.bin.

Hi Shaun. Thanks for the clarification. To the rest of the listers, got a question. How do you know ahead of time that a tar archive will create its own directory? Because I can see myself making the following mistake over and over again if there is no way to pre-determine his information: I untar some package that I obtained from ftp.somewhere.com. I untar the archive in my  home dir thinking it will create its own directory when I do tar xvf archive.tar.gz, but unfortunately it doesn't! So the archive goes into my homedir, and I have to make another dir for it and move the files from that archive into the new dir. Is there any way to pre-determine whether or not a tar archive will create its own directory before you extract the package?

Hi Igor -

I have had that problem too. On my Slackware system the "less"
command is installed in such a way that it automatically shows
the files contained in a tar archive. The first file listed will
be a directory if the  archive will be one that creates its own
directory.

If your "less" will not do that, you can always create a
temporary directory and untar the thing in there. If it does
create its own directory under your temporary one, you can just
"mv" the thing to where you want it.

My syntax was something like this: mv /mnt/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/source /usr/src. This should work under Dos, but doesn't seem to work under Linux. Just to make sure, I added a *.* before the /usr/src. In both cases, I get a message like: mv: directory has been omitted. And it doesn't move anything. In this example, I'm not saying that I am trying to do this, although I did try it before. Basically, what would be the syntax to move a directory tree? Let's say I created a tempdir for a tar archive and untarred it. And it created a dir in /temp, therefore the tree would be /temp/package. Let's say I want to move /package to /usr/local. That would have worked fine if your source was not on a CD. The
thing is, the MV command wants to erase the source after putting
it somewhere else, and your CD is not erasable. You might want to
use "cp" instead with a flag to make it recursive. Probably the
flag would be -r but I would check first.

question. How do you know ahead of time that a tar archive will create its
own directory? Because I can see myself making the following mistake over
and over again if there is no way to pre-determine his information: I untar
some package that I obtained from ftp.somewhere.com. I untar the archive in
my  home dir thinking it will create its own directory when I do tar xvf
archive.tar.gz, but unfortunately it doesn't! So the archive goes into my
homedir, and I have to make another dir for it and move the files from that
archive into the new dir. Is there any way to pre-determine whether or not a
tar archive will create its own directory before you extract the package?

  I have a new drive, I want to cp my windows instalation to it so I don't
have to get some one to read the setup screens to me to re setup windows.
Will cp or mv move the whole contense of my fat32 windows C:\> to another
drive including hidden/system/readonly/longfilenames/anything I forgot?

  I would rather use the cp command rather than the mv command.

Well, use a cp -R, and it should grab about everything.
 If not I know how to make Windows 98 autoinstall if you have a 98 retail
version.
The best way to copy Windows to another drive is to load Windows go to the
ms dos prompt and type.

Or you can do "tar zvtf tarball.tar.gz |less" and the listing of the
tarball will be piped into less for your viewing.  This listing will also
reveal the directory structure within.  I didn't realize less could read
tar files.  <hmmm> have to give that a try since I also have slackware.
