Prey explain what being able to transfer windows files over a network has to do with
alsa?

I used that as an ixample. Look at it this way. You work on redhat 9 in
some office, and I work on a windows machine. I want to comunicate with
your machine, but I want to use alsa to speek rather than that cursed jaws!
I would utelize parts of your system, access linux files and work with them.
Now, I could telnet, but I think you see the difference.

Hi Kevin:
I think you are confusing ALSA with Speakup or some other screen reader.
ALSA, Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (http://www.alsa-project.org) is a
set of soundcard drivers, an interface library to those drivers, and a set
of utilities to manipulate those drivers and provide other related
functionality.
As for what Speakup or any other screen reader for Linux will allow you to
do, I dare say you're preeching to the converted.
Geoff.

Well, no, actually, I don't. JAWS doesn't speak. It interfaces with
(usually) Eloquence, which is a software-based speech
synthesizer. ALSA has no such synthesizer. ALSA just allows one to use
a soundcard. So are you saying you have a text-to-speech software of
some sort? No, I think you've confused the issue even further.

Wait a minute.
You're using a Windows machine, talking with JFW.
You want to send some kind of message to ("communicate with") my Linux
machine, on the same network.
That message will be received and processed, by what ever speech software
I am using on that Linux box.
How could your decision about anything, have any relationship what ever,
to how my Linux system, spoke that information?

Hi all,
Luke, the whole point is that he isn't making any sense at all. I
think he wants to, but can't.
<sigh> It might be worth it to write him privately and see if I can
sort out this tangle. At the moment, I think all that can be done
with this thread is to play cat's cradle.

Ok this is rediculous Kevin for the simple reason that if any of this
were possible and I"m still not there yet; there's nothing to be gain.
I mean that in the sense that the overhead for such transactions over a
netowrk would be prety large in my mind and I'm not a networking expert.
If I understand your saying you could use a Linux box running SPeakup
while sitting at a windows box and this alsa tool would allow you to use
SPeakup on the windows box instead of a windows-based screen reader.
If this understanding is correct, I submit to you this is useless. Why?
Well its simple. If folks need a gui they could always use Gnome and
Gnopernicus. If I correct in my understanding and folks still wanted to
use SPeakup in such a fashion over a network, I still believe the
overhead would be unreasonable. Besides all that, I think most folk
would rather use a Linux box instead of a windows box. THere's nothing
that can't be done on a Linux box that can be done on a windows box as
far as I can tell. Your efforts would be better spent elsewhere. I still
don't see this any of this being ore than a crock, but you sure made a
lot of folk mighty upset because you didn't give us the information
requested in the beginning.
Oh and by the way, you can access files from a Linux box with windows by
using Samba so your statements are just not making sense. I made up the
bit above based on some incredible assumptions. Thanks I made these
observations before my first cup of coffee, now I've taxed my few brain
cells and most go load them up with coffee. I must not be awake yet.

Kevin, you're full of it! You don't know a thing about Alsa, that's sure! And if you meant to say this crap about packets sent

first of all, could we try to trim the size of the postings please?
some of us pay for the data we transfer every time we're on line.
secondly, kevin you should just get nicked and get off.
the top post is from a newbie that knows jack about linux as yet but
knows full well you're wrong and annoying.
kevin I'll say this once so read carefully.

Oh, you mean like what you'd do with samba, for instance?

Umm, I still (like everyone else) don't know how this has anything to do with ALSA?

Umm. Well actually, free software's about freedom, actually.

Can not blind users send and receive windows files over a network now?
There is Samba, NFS, FTP, and many other methods, all of thiwh are highly
standard, and infinitely blind accessible.
How does your software assist in this? Assume I know nothing at all about
your software, and did not read any of the previous threads on this, which
is at least half true.

The ftp protocol is still used. It is like asking why is there more than

Hi all,
Why would anyone want such a thing when there is FTP, activesync, scp
and the like? Why would Windows users want such a thing when there
are any number of clients that will do the job: wsftp, FTP Voyager,
CuteFTP, and putty to name a few.
Why would Linux users want such a thing when exchanging files is
already easily done. You don't explain yourself well at all, Kevin.
Plus, you are *still* writing without using your spell checker. I'm
sorry, I just don't understand this at all. It appears from where I'm
sitting, and I'm not even a techie, to be pure bunkum!

Ann, he probably doesn't have a spell checker. He is using Outlook
express 6 for his mailer. Remember, Windows users have to buy thins
like spell checkers.

have a spell checker!

Hi:
Ann, my understanding is that the spell-checking fascilities are in MS
Word (i.e. Office), and if you don't have Office installed then you don't
have the spell checker for Outlook.

Hi
WEll, I've refrained from responding to this guy's messages... until now.
Kevin, just what the hell do you mean? You sound like some crazed psychopathic supervillain from a bad cartoon contest. You know, the traditional "today
the city, tomorrow the world" line?
Life as you know it is over? I will not be stopped? Come on, man! this is NOT, repeat NOT, how you get people to take you seriously--not like we were
before, but now we definitely are not.
You obviously haven't got a clue what you're talking about, and I think we've all heard enough. And if you ever get your modifications into cups or mailman,
I'm gonna have to question the project maintainers, cause the only way they'd let your mods in is if they were smoking lots of dope. I mean, they'd have to
be doped up or worse to even consider taking you seriously if the way you've treated us is any indication.
However, I do thank you for giving me a good laugh with this last message. Go write some cheap comics or something and quit pissing around here, ok?

Hi all,
Kevin, respect is earned. Respect comes when you have said or done
something well. Respect comes when you have communicated your ideas
well. Respect comes when you have enough knowledge to explain what
you mean in clear, concise, understandable ways. Respect comes when
you are man enough to admit that you have a learning difference, and
asking us politely if we understand what you are trying to say because
you have difficulty comunicating. Respect comes when you have the
humility to understand that you have trouble writing English so that
you can't tell the difference between "hear" and "here", and you seek
help so that you will be able to write coherent sentences.
I'm not a techie, I'm just a user. I was totally confused by your
posts. I believe that you believe you are communicating your ideas.
I believe that you may be asking about technology that already exists,
but I can't untangle your communication well enough so that I can
figure out what you are talking about.
Go away, seek help for your writing problem. Seek more knowledge
about Linux, and when you return, you may be better able to
communicate your ideas.

When I read your poste I had a nice laugh. I thank you for that!
A learning difference? What in God's name are you implying?
I have a fine understanding of Linux. If I didn't, I would not even touch
the alsa tools!
Who in there right mind would create a release of a product and then realize
"I have no idea what this is?" Perhaps you should rethink some things.

Now if you had stopped at "Damn it!", I'd've agreed with you.
Now refresh my memory. What was it you were saying open source (free
software really, but who's counting?) is all about? All about your
vision for it? Puh-leez.

Umm. ... A tweak of the ALSA tools, you say? Sure wish you'd make up
your mind on what it is that you've done. That aside, I think you must
speak a different brand of English (or American, if you like) than the
rest of us. Let's compare:

And

How do you figure that "Linux the way you view it" is not "your
vision" of it?
Guys, if this is how Kevin speaks English (or American, if you like),
it's no wonder we don't understand WTF he's talking about!

As someone who has come to this thread recently, I went back and read all
your posts. I downloaded the alsa-tools 0.9.4 release from
ftp.alsa-project.org. I also grabbed the most recent 0.9.8 release. Your
name doesn't appear anywhere, either in documentation or source code.
further more, there is no reference to frameviewing or anything like it.
And neither there should be, as alsa-tools are for dealing with sound
cards and not reading the screen.
You get upset that no-one seems to understand your software, but I dare say
that no-one has been able to find it (I certainly haven't and I've read
every message you've posted to this list). Tell us where it is and we'll
check it out. Tell us what it is called and how we're meant to use it.
And I'm sure you'll get a fair and honest crytique of it.

Hi Kevin:
I noticed that you didn't answer my questions. So, at the risk of wasting
mine and everybody else's time, I will ask you one last time:
1. What is your specific piece of software called?
2. What *exactly* does it do?
3. Where do I download it from?
I've not found anything remotely like what you've attempted to describe in
your previous posts in the alsa-tools package, either 0.9.4 or the current
0.9.8 release.
This will be my last attempt to understand what you're trying to tell us.
Geoff.

I did not touch 0.9.
What it does is reads the screen rather than reading the sound card as other
versions have done.

Personally, I think you're confused a bit:
1. Alsa does not "read" the sound card, but simply provides an interface to
it; if you've provided an interface to the screen, that's already been done
in the C library.
2. What exactly reads the screen if you didn't touch alsa 0.9?
3. Since it reads the screen, what does it do to interpprit what it finds?

Kevein we can't respect you and I know I said I wouldn't say no more on

someone who shows us no respect. No Kevin you have not shown us any
respect at all. You make all these wild claims and give us some
documentation that says absolutely nothing and then you of course insult

You want respect son, earn it.

See, even that is wrong.
Bash is not *the* shell, it is *a* shell, there are others, ever heard of
csh or ksh, or even other born shell derivitives like ash? No? Didn't
think so.

What we've failed to discern from your vague messages is,
How exactly do you see it in the future.

That's it! I have had it! I was going to stay out of this discussion, but I am getting sick of this. Kevin, are you going to tell us exactly what you are talking about in plain English? You obviously can, as I have seen from some of your posts. However, as of now, all you are doing is posting little blips about what you are talking about. You may or may not have a good idea, I don't know. Either explain, in plain english, what the hell you are talking about or get lost. Ok?

In other words you want to be another billyboy gates? Life will be over
if you were to do anything to any program because the user probably
would kill themselves. Look your shit you suck go away and quit trying
to piss up a perfectly good Linux world. My head is really hurting and
I'm in a perfectly good mood to seriously poor gas on your ass and light
you up. You want flames? Baby I got flames for you.
Now look we've given you the time of day, you've entertained us, you've
annoyed us, now instead of writing go and produce something of value.
You know make your mark like my dog does.

If I may brave a post on this subject, Outlook Express does indeed have a
spell checker.
However, please don't hold the fact that I'm posting from said client, nor
the fact that I'm still only a part time Linux user against me. Smile.
It must be said that if it weren't for people trying to confuse the
issue, as with the recent ULSA thread, the process of trying to understand
an alien OS would probably be a mite easier.
Regards,
Tink.

Hi. When I last ran Windows, you needed MS office before the spell
checker in outlook express would work. It's been 3 years since I ran
Windows so my comment was based on how it worked back then.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be offensive. I think actually, you may be
right. I'd almost forgotten I had MS Office installed on this machine, as I
rarely use it these days. I can't be troubled to uninstall it, to find out,
so I'm happy to stand corrected.

What release.
You've talked of alsa, speakup, frames, and terminal services; I'm not sure
how this fits together.

Hi tink,
Ask whatever questions you need. We may sent you to docs, but we'll
be happy to tell you just where they are, and if you have trouble
interpreting them, we'll give you a hand. Ignore the extraneous
threads.

Hi Ann,
On 25 Oct 2003 10:16:01 (my local time 16:16:01), you typed::
AP> You mean Outlook Excuse has no spell checker? Wordpad has no
AP> spellchecker?
I don't know about Outdoor depress, because i don't use it, but The
bat!, the mail client i'm using has a spell checker. Doesn't wordpad
have a spell checker? ... I wonder that, but it wouldn't surprice me
if they didn't have one.
