Hello
I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, so
apologies if not. Please feel free to point me to the correct place. But
here goes.
I am quite a new or should I say casual Linux user. I am currently using
the latest LTS of Ubuntu running in a VM. After days of searching and
tinkering, I finally have Speakup working. Yay! I am really impressed
with it, so thank you.
Could anyone please give me some pointers on using VI or VIM or some
other console editor with Speakup please? When I navigate using the VIM
key bindings, Speakup either does not respond, or does so
intermittently. Am I missing something that I should have set?
I am quite comfortable moving around the filesystem, having been an OS X
user for over ten years and doing a lot of command line work in that time.
Thank you
Best
James

I guess you are missing the
set noruler
config line, to avoid vim from updating cursor position at the bottom of
the line.

Hello James: Welcome to linux and speakup. Pretty much all of the
editors work with speakup although with varying levels of
accessibility. Vi is a favourite and Samuel has mentioned the
configuration change to make it work better. I myself use emacs and
find it works very well although I find silencing the status line
helps a lot. The simple editors also work but have different
foibles. There is also emacspeak wich is T.V. Ramans emacs speech
interface which I understand works quite nicely.
Enjoy.

Hello Dietmar: I don't use joe so all I can tell you is find where the
row and column numbers are shown and then mark that area to be
silent. You set a silence are by placing your reading cursor at the
first position of the window you wish to silence and hitting
speakup-f1. Move the reading cursor to the end of the area to be
silenced and hit speakup-f1 again. Then you do speakup-f4 to silence
that window/area. The details should be discussed in the speakup users
guide on the web site.
Good luck.

Hi again James: Yes that was the speakup list you asked on. I believe
we are having this conversation off the list or my filter is catching
these messages before being sifted to the list.
I don't use vi so can't answer your question. about that. There are
lots of vi users though so maybe someone else will have a suggestion.
I don't really have much to do with the daily up keep or modification
of speakup. There are very many new and talented users which have
taken over that role. I am mostly a sideline kibitzer these days if
anything.
I will Cc this reply back to the list so hopefully someone else will
answer your vi question

Dietmer,
Look at .joerc file in your home directory there is an entry that controls
what is displayed on the status line and here you can remove row and collumn
display if you don't want them. I believe there is a clock display there
also you may not want to talk a lot.
Be sure to read how to change entries in .joerc as it's a matter of indents
in some cases.

Dietmar,
Note that the file has or may have that old leading "dot" that makes it a
hidden file.
.joerc
It's extensive and the status line is way down below all the color stuff

To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
grep can help cut the boring out.
grep -in status .joerc will show all lines with line numbers in .joerc
with status on them and be case-insensitive about that search too. If
another editor can be opened on .joerc with the first line number of
interest then configuration improvement can happen more quickly with
less boredom.
Use of sed can be quite effective with the correct sed script too.

To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
While this is not about VI or vim, I notice in nano when running
search-and-replace, even when it finds items, nano will say "not found" I
suppose I should also post on a help nano list. This seems quite missleading.
Thanks in advance
