Hi,
I'm new in Linux. My questions are:
1. How do I download Linux.
2. Which version do I need.
3. How do I download speakfreely for linux and windows, I got the jaws
scripts.
4. Does speakup work with Braille.
5. Are there software synthesizers available for linux.
6. How closely related tounix is linux inits command structure?
7. When can I go to a site to learn linux, how to install it and get a
computer up and running?
Urgently seeking info, thanks.

gj: Umm, don't know don't have a crystal ball to see what browser etc
your using. As with many of your questions below, try looking at the
speakup site http://linux-speakup.org
>2. Which version do I need.
gj: The latest might be a good start. If your referring to which
distribution then that's a matter of personal choice. Again you'll see
more on the speakup site.
>3. How do I download speakfreely for linux and windows, I got the jaws

gj: Do you mean where? Try looking on the speakup site's goodies
directory.
>4. Does speakup work with Braille.
gj: Yes speakup will work along side brltty but speakup doesn't have
braille support built in.
>5. Are there software synthesizers available for linux.
gj: Yes, but none of them will work with speakup. Again read the stuff
on the speakup site.
>6. How closely related tounix is linux inits command structure?
gj: Again I need a crystal ball. I think that your asking about Unix,
well its very similar.
>7. When can I go to a site to learn linux, how to install it and get a

gj: Again a good starting point is the speakup site, if your concerned
with installing a talking distribution. But why not use your friendly
google search engine for non blinux user related sites.

gj: So why are you waisting my time asking questions that you can gain
from the speakup site, which you must be aware of as you've joined the
list.

These answers didn't really help, I read all the info on linux-speakup.org
before I wrote the questions.
Need more in-depth help,
John

Well, You will need a fast internet connection, and a cdr drive. How you
get linyux depends on which flavor. You should check out:
ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/speakup/disks/ for more info.
> 2. Which version do I need.
Just get whatever version is on the speakup ftp server. You need: redhat
7.2 or better, debian 2.2, slackware 7/8.
> 3. How do I download speakfreely for linux and windows, I got the jaws
> scripts.
try: www.speakfreely.org
> 4. Does speakup work with Braille.
I'm not going to answer this question, because I'm not sure.
> 5. Are there software synthesizers available for linux.
Yes there are software synths for linux, but they don't work with speakup.
> 6. How closely related tounix is linux inits command structure?
Linux is a form of unix
> 7. When can I go to a site to learn linux, how to install it and get a

That's what this list is for.

Hi
With respect you didn't read the information on the site. I'm sorry
that my answers didn't help but you must check your questions carefully
before posting. What do you mean when you ask how to download? Because
the answer is to click on a link of either webpage or ftp site. Were
you asking whether GNU/Linux is like Unix? Come on, take responsibility
and ask specific questions, rather than demanding the answers to
questions that are immediately accessible to you.
What documentation have you read?

What the copulating hades ever possessed you to write such a post? I
understand that we're all a bit tense because of Teddy's constant
trolling, but there's no reason to blast those who might not organize
their thoughts in the way that *you* approve of. What really pisses me off
about your post, is that's a perfect example of what some folks, Teddy for
example, bitch about the Linux community for. That's the reason I'm not
on the Blinux list, for example. The really cool thing about the Speakup
list is that, in the vast majority of cases, we've been free of such
trash. No-one is holding a gun to your head requiring you to answer every
post that you read. If a question doesn't meet your ultra high standards
for organization, why not do the Net a favor and just move on without
responding.
Thanks for listening.

Hi all,
Don't think we need to be that impatient with people.
ZJohn, I think Gena answered most of your questions, in so far as they
were asked. You asked general questions, questions which to most of
us are very basic. Now, let me ask you some questions.
What did you read on the speakup site, and what if anything did you
gather from it? What didn't you understand?

Hi
And those who want to help, want the requests to be polite and specific.
This aggressive demanding style will not get you what you want.
I'd had waited and saw that you hadn't been responded to, so I gave you
answers to each of your questions. I then gave you a dose of your own
medicine with your final demand. To which you couldn't acknowledge
those questions I had answered satisfactorily.

Hi
Apologies for returning the tone that was received. But the most
valuable lesson that original poster needs to learn is to be able to ask
politely and precisely what it is they want. I notice you haven't
attempted to answer the impossible questions. I look forward to
discussing these issues on the reflecter with you.
I'm hurt that you suggest that I have ultra high standards. I was
attempting to help. There are many posts to which I do not reply.

Hi all,
Whew! Is there a full moon this week or what? This is the second
list I've been on where people have been sniping at each other, no
actually, it's the third one.
How about we start all over again, folks? Would the newbie who
started this thread ask his questions again, and this time, please
tell us what you read and what you didn't understand.
What we oldsters probably forget is that sometimes messages on Windows
lists talk about how great Linux is, but they don't say what it is.
They give a whole lot of misinformation too, so that when the newbie
finds a list like this one, he or she has to get all the
misinformation trashed before the real stuff can be assimilated.
Let's give John our newest newbie another chance to get things
clarified.

Hi,
Actually, I did answer most, if not all of Jon's questions by phone.
I greatly prefer voice communication and it seems to work out for John
also. And I must say that I found nothing rude or offensive in any of
his posts. He just asked a bunch of non-specific questions
all at once.
I am deeply sorry if I hurt you in any way, Gena. You folks are my
brothers and sisters in the communities, both blindness and Linux. But
I
value this list where people can com with any question about Linux or
Speakup and get accurate and friendly assistance.
Now I'm off to the reflector to see if you're around.
Hope this clarifies my position, somewhat.
