OT: I lost my dictionary

On archlinux I seem to have lost access to my online dictionary after a
recent upgrade. I have been using dictd. The file /etc/dict/dictd.conf
says is will find a list of dictionaries under /usr/lib/dict, but that
seems to be an empty directory.

Anybody else seeing this? Anybody know how to fix it?

Hello Chuck!  dict is a client server application, have you looked to
see if you have dictd installed, which is the server side of the
program.  You could also look at dict.conf to see if their is a defualt
net sever that you can uncoment.  If you have dictd installed, then
maybe the actually dictionary files didn't get installed.  Whether this
is an arch problem, or whether the package has been split in to multiple
components, I can't say as I am a Debian user.  But I know what you
mean, dict is certainly very useful.

Hi Gene,

I have had the dictd service running on this arch system for years, and
use it regularly, so it's been fully functiional until just a few days
ago. I'm the kind of guy who can't read a book without a dictionary
handy. Now I see that it's tagged in at least some of the arch
repositories as out of date, with no obvious text mode command line
substitutes. Plenty of gnome dictionaries, but nothing I want to use.

Pity.

Hi Gene,

You suggested pointing my browser at www.dict.org to see what I can
learn. I got the same results with both elinks and edbrowse, and
discovered that the website does not respond. It doesn't fail, it just
does not respond. I'm curious what would happen if you were to try that.
Perhaps the problem is theirs, not mine.

Hi chuck.  I get absolutely no response from www.dict.org either.  I
tried looking atthe site with nmap, and got no response.  I also tried
pointing lynx at it and got no response either.  So it's either really
down, or they really don't want anyone accessing it.

I don't no what port my server is on, so I'll have to check.  Once I
find out, and set things up on my router, you could  try using dict
--host collinsnet.net, but it will be a while before I can check that
out.  I'll let you know when I'm ready to try.

Well, Chuck, I'm  sorry.  This would take a bit more setup than I'm
willing to fiddle with.  Not only would I have to open up port 2628 on
my router, but it appears that the config file requires the specific
acceptence of specific ip addresses.  It's more than I'm willing to
fiddle with.

Hi Gene,

Don't worry about it. But I gather from what you said that you are still
able to use the dict command successfully, even though www.dict.org does
not respond to your direct probes. If that's the case, perhaps that URL
only resp;onds to the servers on the end users' hosts.  That would mean
the problem is still on my setup.

Hi Chuck.  I think what probably happened to you is that your local
dictionary files somehow got wiped.  I'd try reinstalling gcid, and if
you like a more modern dictionary, wordsmith.  Or, irf you like, point
your weg growser at www.dictionary.com.  Of course, if you have a second
generation victor stream, you could always use it to search
wictionary.org.  (grin)

By the way, I'm sure looking forward totheir upgrade for the victor
stream, which is supposed to let you search bard, and download
talkingbooks directly.  That is going to be just too stiffie!

Hi Gene,

Thanks for the suggestions. I may be the only blind guy in America
without a Victor Stream, but the direct download feature is very nice.
For six months I used an iPhone where the bard-mobile app by NLS did the
same thing, turning the device into a DTB reader. It turned out to be
too expensive to keep though. And way too much junk mail from Apple.

also don't have one, and don't even feel the need, nor have the money to
purchase something like that <smile>. In fact, I don't have a lot of the
things that They, you kno, the They with a capital T, think we should
have lol. No Victor, none a dem crapple apples, no specialized or
temporarily marked up appliances, and certainly none a dat windblows and
shark biting a CD crap. Believe it or not, My family has gone almost
completely Linux and Linux related. Linux computers, Android phones,
Chromebooks and Sansa players running Rockbox, all of which are working
nicely. Yeah, it would be nice to get direct NLS downloads and to be
able to play them on our Android phones, but They, again that's the They
with a capital T, don't think we should have something nice like that,
so They aren't developing it for anyone other than those who do what
They say and get a crapple apple or a piece of specialized blindy tech.
I also thought it would be a good idea to develop a drop-in Rockbox
plugin that could be downloaded from the BARD website, so that we could
use off-the-shelf Sansa players to play books, but again, They with a
capital T don't think we should be using such things I guess. But then
again, I've always been one to buck the system, fight the power and use
mostly off-the-shelf products wherever possible, and adapt them using
free and open source technology if they don't already have it.

The issue of NLS books is complicated by the copyright problem. As I
understand it, publishers have agreed to extending blanket permission to
waive copyright restrictions for the reproduction of books in an
accessible format for the blind and physically handicapped, providing
the special format cannot be played on standard devices by the general
public.

I'd have sworn NLS made an Android version of their app. I wouldn't just 
dismiss the value of that mobile app though. If you use the mobile app, 
you have a book or two or two  dozen with you where ever you take your 
smart phone. You can get more any time you have a network connection. I 
never use the digital player they sent me any more. I probably use the 
tape player more often. That mobile app is a beautiful thing. It is sweet.
I don't know if there is an android version but another seet app is 
read2go for bookshare.

Crapple, I like that LOL! I too don't have a victor stream, and don't
plan to get one, since I'm still quite happy with my booksense XT. I
probably wouldn't have one of those either, if I wasn't able to get it
at a significant discount when GW Micro was getting rid of their demo
units a few years ago.

As for the BARD ap on Android, someone on the eyes-free list said they
were planning to release it in the Fall, but I'll believe it when I
can download and use it on my phone.

Yes, dict.org is down for some reason.  This includes both their web
server and their dictionary server.  So I set up a dictd of my own.
Feel free to add
server the-brannons.com
to /etc/dict/dict.conf if you wish.  I'd put it before dict.org for now,
so that you don't get long waits while the dict.org connection attempt
times out.
I'm not running this on the-brannons.com itself.  It's actually being reverse
proxied through an ssh tunnel to another box, because it was easier to install
all these dictionaries on Gentoo than Arch.  Given that, it may be
flaky, so folks probably can't rely on it.  It works for now.

If it were to become a desired need, I would be willing to open my
dictd server up to the general network as well. I don't know why the
folks that created the software would decide to not support it any
more but I too would be lost without access to a dictionary
continually.

The dictd software is certainly convenient, and if it can be kept alive
by creating or sharing other databases it would be a real advantage. The
default dict.conf comes with two servers specified, localhost and
dict.org.  It says the initrc script will scan /etc/dict for local
dictionaries, but on my system that directory is empty. So perhaps it
makes sense for users to populate that directory with appropriate
dictionaries.  I put Chris's server in the dict.conf file as #2, and it
works fine. But other servers would be nice to have in a pinch.

Hi Chuck.  Where does arch get it's packages from?  You should be able
to search the package list for a package called dict-gcide, or
goldendict-wordnet, which is a more modern dictionary module for dict.

Chuck,
You need to install dictionaries separately from the dictd daemon in
order to run a local server.  As far as I can tell, on Arch, they have
to be built from source.  There are PKGBUILDs in the AUR.
Unfortunately, the sources are on dict.org, which isn't responding at
the moment.

As for dict.org itself, I hope the downtime is just temporary.

unable to use dict for several days now on any system I have access to,
mostly Fedora 20, but that isn't the problem as I think you've found
out.

So, it's a mystery. I hope we get an answer and a revived dict soon. I

Hello all,

Yes, dict.org disappeared. I just tried it and viola! It is back! I was 
hoping I would not have to swim with sharks and use "free" commercial 
dictionaries...they are hard to access.

And Kyle, I laughed out loud when I read your comments about Apple, et 
all. Here, I thought I was the only fiercely non-commercial 
human...sorry to say I use W7 and JAWS but sometimes one has to 
compromise...

Under Ubuntu/debian there are dictionary packages which contain the actual 
dictionaries and the dictd server which, together, can provide one with an 
off-line version of dict.
