Hi,
I downloaded espeakup-squeeze-i386.iso, and it is only 19 MB in size.
Is this a copy of Debian without a desktop environment with Speakup, or is
it just an ISO image of a speakup installation?

It is a netinst installation. It uses a text based installer, but the installed
system, assuming you choose it, will have a gnome desktop with orca, etc..

I had the same concern when I first downloaded that iso, since the regular iso
is 191 meg, but it did in fact install a full text and GUI system.

Thanks for the answer.
Also, do you know if I boot to it on from one USB thumbdrive, that I can do
an install onto another thumbdrive?
I would rather do that than a duel-boot system this time.

I suppose that's possible, but I've never tried it.

How do I get it to talk after booting to it?
Thanks.

I did an s after the boot prompt with the eSpeakupSqueeze ISO, and it looked
like it did something, but it did not beep so I did not expect any speech.
I can't send the amixer scontrol thing because I have nobody to read the
screen here.
Is there another such version for different devices?
This is on a netbook,
MSI wind u100 motherboard, not sure of the sound chip, I think it is a
RealTek.

Try plug in headphones to the wind or unplug them to get sound on
speakers headphone and speakers are a different volume control.
I'll try this later on my wind U100 and tell you what results I get.
alt-f2 after boot, press enter.
amixer set Master 100%
amixer set Speaker 100%

might help will check this also.

Hi Kerry,
I didn't try the headphones, as I would have to dig some out, but it should
not be that, as I have booted up to many operating systems on this computer,
and I get software speech.
I tried your amixer commands, and that did not help.
Sounds like the folks working on this need to know about this audio chip so
they can write it into the code.

it's supported in Alsa, it's a Realtek alc883 I believe however the hda
pin mappings are difficult.

I've got speech from grml on the Wind so i'll test this and see if I can
get the amixer fiddles for it and report them.
Basically a script fires up after boot and tries to figure out what you
have and tickle it in such a way that sound becomes audible.

And Debian uses the same script, so it's supposed to work. Maybe some
driver is missing ; more information is needed.

To rule out possibilities, Glenn, can you try booting this on a regular PC, just
to see if you can get it to come up talking?

I first thought of that, but I don't have another PC that supports booting

I doubt that grml is using the same script as debian. The grml developers
were talking about it on the grml list. Sound didn't work on the release
candidate and it sounded to me like they did something on their own to fix
it. They had to unmute Master, Front, and PCM and set volume. But if they
just borrowed a script from debian, I don't think they'd have had to discuss
how to do that.

Ok, so they have a modified version of it perhaps. I just remember that
I had seen a script in grml that was very close to what we have in
Debian.

The Debian script already unmutes these.

Hello, Glenn.

I have only dealt with the command line side of wireless setup slightly,
so I do not have a full working knowlege of these tools, but you may
want to search the manpages for iwconfig and iwlist using the man
command. Here are the brief descriptions for these two utilities which
are displayed at the top of the manpages for them:

iwconfig - configure a wireless network interface
iwlist - Get more detailed wireless information from a wireless interface

The ip command could probably do the trick as well, but I am completely
unfamiliar with it.

ip - show / manipulate routing, devices, policy routing and tunnels

I hope that this will help to get you on your way.

I'm sorry I cannot be of any further help right now.

Take care.

Thanks Kerry and Øyvindk,
A couple more things,
What do I enter to start a download/install?
And I would like to my WIFI for this, what is the terminal command for
connecting wirelessly to my router?
Seems that there is something like "netscan" or something.
Thanks.

No this can only install Debian squeeze as it is a business card image
that pulls Debian down from the repository.

Hi,

Debian Squeeze is Debian 6.0 Stable.

I doubt you can use the installer provided on this disk image to install ubuntu or vinux.

I think the debian installer will only install debian stable, testing or sid (unstable).

To install ubuntu you need a ubuntu installer ISO etc.
Vinux provides their own disk images for installation, live cds etc.

But installing ubuntu for later converting it to Vinux is possible as I understand.
The vinux project provides scripts to "convert" vanilla ubuntu into vinux.
