configuring asterisk:cheap phone?

hello list,
I'm trying to figure out how I might be able to configure asterisk so that it works as a calling card.
I'm not sure how much it would cost to do this, but here's my idea:
I need to be able to use a cell for a week or so when I go up to Maryland for a camp. I was thinking of going with a quick prepaid phone, but I'm not quite sure. I might be able to borrow my grandma's phone, and I was thinking that I could just purchase a cheap 1800 number and do what I'm trying to set up.
Basically I'd call this number, put in my password and be able to dial out using asterisk and my voip.
I don't have a lot of cash to throw around on this, so your ideas here for a cheap inexpensive way to do this would be awesome.

Well, I've been interested in asterisk for a while.
Getting a pbx distro sounds cool, though. Only issues I've had is the 
install. If I can get to ssh I'm good, but I don't tend to be able to get 
distros installed by myself, which is rather irritating. :)

it is centos but can be installed using serial console and null modem.
Or you can do auto-install if you are happy to oose contents of hard drive.

Hi. I have a friend who uses Callcentric (http://www.callcentric.com), for
incoming and outgoing calls. As far as I know they charge $19.95 for unlimited
calling to the U.S and Canada, and $5.95 for an incoming number only. If you
decide to signup with them though and want to still use Asterisk, you'll have to
use 1.4, since 1.6 still has some interoperability issues. Hth.

werd, I think 1.4 has more docs anyway, but that's pretty cheap. $25/m for 
phone, anyway.
I paid $20 for magic jack, but that was for the year; it sorta works half 
the time and doesn't the other half. It's served it's purpose, all be it 
half-way, and it was a decent writeoff; I've had fun breaking it. :)

I wonder what unlimitted means in this case? I've heard a lot of stories 
about people finding out later that "unlimitted" means 1,000 
minutes/month, and they end up getting in trouble with the provider when 
they go over.

This might not apply to you, but in my experience, dialing numbers
considered toll free on land lines from your cell will still use your
plan minutes. So, if you're trying to avoid long distance charges, you
should be fine, but if you're point is to avoid using plan minutes,
then I wouldn't bother with the whole setup, unless you know that toll
free numbers really are toll free on your plan.

Well, I think the other part of the idea was to set up a local number in the 
area he will travel to or call the tollfree from a landline out there. I 
think I'd do the first one if possible as it's probably cheaper. If you had 
free incoming on a cell, you could get all calls free without ever touching 
a plan minute unless the system went down.

Most VOIP providers offer 1-800 numbers I think...check out teliax if 
you want something native-IAX2.  I'm not sure on their prices though.  
For being able to dial out from the number, check out the Disa (direct 
inward system access) application that comes with asterisk.  This allows 
you to enter an auth code and get a PBX dialtone that you can dial out 
on.

I would try for a cheap local number in your grandma's area from someone 
like Vitelity. Is there anyone else around in the states that will just give 
you a number like this without dealing with extra hardware without dealing 
with printing and filling out paper forms? The main technical issue I see 
with this is finding a cheap virtual server provider out there that supports 
the Zaptel stuff and/or has images like PBX In A Flash or Trixbox to just 
get it going quickly. It's probably better for education to learn it the 
manual way, but for something like this, I'd want access to a solution like 
you described hooked up to an unlimited outgoing for the US plan.

   Asterisk has a steep learning curve and I wouldn't recommend starting into it if you are only going to use it for a short time. Once you get a handle on it, setting up new phones/lines is very quick and easy. If you are using Debian, there is an asterisk apt package that does quite nicely fo rthe base asterisk installation.

Freepbx is pretty good, lynx won't work with it, but for the novice
user and even the more advanced user, its quite helpful for setting up
asterisk and you can still customize config files if you do it in the
right place.

I have set up Asterisk systems at several locations.  I generally
still use Trixbox, though I'll probably switch soon to PBX in a Flash
or a similar competing system.  Fonality, the company that bought
Trixbox, is acting in several essentially evil ways, so the community
is moving away from them.

In general, I recommend installing Asterisk on a dedicated system with
one of the Asterisk distros, like Trixbox.  It will save you many
hours of headaches in the long run.  For a user trying to save a few
bucks while at grandma's house, I'd say stay away from Asterisk and
buy a cheap phone card.

The last time I tried PBX in a Flash, around December, it was still
unstable relative to Trixbox.  I had a lot of trouble getting it to
work how I wanted.  However, that's changing fast, and may already be
out-of-date information.

At home, I use a Trixbox system, which I integrated tightly with the
Asterisk system I built for work.  It's kind of cool.  If anyone calls
my work number, it rings a VoIP phone at work, a VoIP business phone
at home, and every wireless phone in the house.  My wife hates it, but
I find it very convenient.  For home service, I use VoIP Street, and
can attest that they have outstanding voice quality.  However, since
my wife's business went under due to the rotten economy, she talks on
the phone all the time!  I'd save money just paying $25/month to
Vonage.
