Hello!
How do I use speakup with speech dispatcher?
I used to use speechd-up, but that was a long time ago, and now that seems to be abandonware.

Once speech-dispatcher is running, you just run speechd-up -d
There is a fork of speech-dispatcher and speechd-up under the name 
opentts.
The programs have different names, but are the maintained versions of the 
mensioned programs.

The debian based distros have packages for both speech-dispatcher and 
speechd-up.

Sorry, thought it came from Debian, but I am running Ubuntu Jaunty which 
has the package under the name of speechd-up.

Hi.  The current state of speech-dispatcher speechd-up and the opentts fork is confusing.
Speech-dispatcher exists in Debian, but speechd-up and the opentts fork appear to only
be available in Ubuntu.
For now, I use speech-dispatcher for Orca and espeak for speakup.

Hello!
Ok, I got speechd-up working at first.
Then I wanted to implement support for both swift aand dectalk.
I messed around very much, but didn't get software dectalk to work.
Then suddenly, I get errors that a config file isn't found in my home 
directory.
when running spd-conf it seems to work, but when I press enter after the 
final question I get a very much python errors, and that it can't find my 
config file.
What is this?
speech dispatcher doesn't say anything either.

Hi.  I don't run speech-dispatcher as a user.  I run it system wide.  With that
config, I don't have any problems using Deqtalk or Swift.
Never used spd-conf, so can't help with that.
You might need to ask on ubuntu-accessibility.  
I believe Ubuntu is the distro that created that
program and wants users to run speech-dispatcher from there home dir.
Spd-conf does exist in the Debian package, but I just edit config files in /etc/speech-dispatcher.

Yes, it is that I do too, and I run as a system service.
but it says that config files are not found anyway.
Is there a plase in the files where I can specify where dispatcher looks for 
config files?
Also, could you please send your swift and dectalk files to me privately, so 
that I can get this to work?

that is error is harmless, the daemon should still start.  check by running ps -e | grep speech-dispatcher, you should see a speech-dispatcher process running.  If it is running you can test that it is infact usable by telneting to port 6560 on localhost.  There will we a opentts releease very soon, but currently you have to get opentts with from git://git.opentts.org/opentts.git.

Hi,

Ok, When telneted to speech-dispatcher you can send SPEAK then hit then type something and then enter then a period and enter again, to see where the problem is.  You can also while telneted to speech-dispatcher type LIST output_modules to see what modules are loaded.  Finally you can check what modules are loaded by running ps -e | grep sd_.  
This sort of thing is a bit easier to sort out over irc, if you like I am tbsaunde on freenode.

from the command-line and if it does not speak, look in the logs.
They are usually in /var/log/speech-dispatcher.

Hi.
The error about not finding config files when speech-dispatcher is running as a system wide
service is a bug caused when speech-dispatcher was updated
to support config files in the user's home dir.  You can ignore it, but
it would be nice if it was fixed.
Are you sure swift and Deqtalk work with your current sound card?
The dtk-generic.conf and swift.conf files I have aren't good since they let the say
and swift programs talk directly to the sound card.  I have a sblive in this box, so it
doesn't matter.  It would be better to modify the files to output wav files and use aplay.
I had versions of both files that did this at one time, but don't know what happened to them.

no just put that file in /etc/speech-dispatcher/modules, and make sure there is an uncommented line adding the switft module in speechd.conf

Hi.  you will need an addmodule line in speechd.conf
The swift-generic.conf file is the default config file for swift using the generic module.

Be aware I've edited that file, so you will need to go through it and make the changes specific for your needs.
Currently, it has no default speech module since that was the only way I could select all available
modules in Orca.
Espeak, dtk-generic, and swift-generic are the only modules enabled.

The config file message is dumb, but harmless and it goes on to find
them in the correct place anyway.  I have had both the swift and dec
modules working, but swift does not do well in a normal console
environment, its much more suited to asterisk or some such where it just
plays a short phrase.

I agree.  I use espeakup.  It's fast and small.
I keep speech-dispatcher running for Orca.
Swift is also good for creating audio files from text files.
