getting started with debian

Hi,

I think I made a mistake with my debian install.

When I got the point of choosing packages, I selected the customise 
option where I think I should have gone for desktop machine.

I do not think anything was installed as I was a bit baffled with the 
info.

So, should I now start again and reinstall or try and get some 
packages with apt?

Also, was not sure what I should have done with the mail choice that 
followed.

I get mail currently via pop and send with smtp.  I usean adsl rooter 
connected to the network card which I believe the install detected.

I would now like to try some simple tasks like email to get used to 
speakup and the directory and file structure of debian.

A bit of help on this would be good.

Now when I started my Linux class, my question how did you install debian 
w/o speech support?
I have to do the very same thing; install it from a CD onto a blank hd. What 
do I need to hav (besides the debian image itself) good people in order to 
do the instalation?
Or I'd better drop the class while it's not too late...

Your best bet for installing Debian is to use the Speakup-enabled image at
http://people.debian.org/~shane
You will need a hardware speech synthesizer to use this installer, since it
doesn't support software speech.  The speakup documentation at linux-speakup.org
can tell you what synthesizers are supported.  I have only used the Dectalk and
litetalk, so I am unsure of all the other supported synthesizers.
Unfortunately, if the box you are using doesn't have a serial port, you are
pretty much s.o.l. , since Speakup doesn't support USB devices at this time.

Hi Ned

I got my debian iso from 
http://people.debian.org/~shane/net

This was a 150 mb download so you will need a fast connection.

Have a look at the speakup user documentation.

If you have a com port and a supported synth and you set your bios to 
boot from cd then you are on your way.

There is a text document on the download page which will tell you the 
string for your synth which you will need at the unspoken prompt 
which will appear a few seconds after the cd drive starts reading.

You should have speech then for the rest of the install.

I found the debian instalationl manual useful which you can get from 
www.debian.org.

Good luck and enjoy it is not a frightening as it seems and if you 
mess it up as you are using a clean hard drive you can always try 
again and not worry about loosing stuff.

You can still run tasksel and check desktop in the list you find there.  All is
not lost.

As for getting mail from your pop server and sending it through a remote smtp
server, you will need to install fetchmail or getmail.  Either one of those will
retrieve mail from a pop server.  You will also need to configure your local
mail server as a smarthost which will relay the mail you send out to the remote
smtp server of your choice.  Maybe soneone who has done this can point you to
the correct docs to accomplish this, but I can point you to tldp.org and
linuxquestions.org to get you started.
