I am trying to use the speakup.i boot disk from slackware and get no speech.
I have put "ramdisk speakup_synth=ltlk" on the boot line. Of course I am
using a doubletalk LT. is there something I am forgetting? I have also tried
adding speakup_ser=0 sense the doubletalk is on com1. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi Thomas: How did you create the floppy disk? If you use
rawrite.exe you can get problems with the image not being copied
correctly if you leave speech running from jfw or windoweyes or asap.

The other question is when you don't hear any speech, does it sound
like the kernel is actually loading or not?

um. kirk? I think, if this is what I think your replying to,
his problem is with zipspeak or is that another person?
sorry if I'm wrong.

It was referring to another person *smile*

To expand more on this what I've done is booted into only dos and then
used rawrite.exe from realdos mode. Also, hit your control key or what
ever turns off your dos screen reader off. If you don't have a dos screen
reader then just cd \directory of where ever the files are and type
rawrite speakup.i a: and press enter.
When you hear the floppy stop spinning it should be completed.

Now boot with it. After the floppy is read for a bit and stops doing
nothing it is at the lilo prompt. At this point type: ramdisk
speakup_synth=xxx where xxx is the 4 to 6 code for your synthesizer.
Press enter and you will hear the floppy spinning again, this is while it
loads the kernel. If all goes well your machine will start speaking.
>From there you can follow the directions. It will ask you to replace the
kernel disk with a root disk which you should have previously rawritten to
a floppy. rawritten is that a word? Anyway, write if you still have
troubles.

HI Kirk,

I did use rawrite.exe and did it under windows ME with JFW. Could this be
my problem?

Hi Matthew: I certainly could be. I have to admit I wasn't really
paying to close of attention to your thread because it looked like
Shaun and Greg were helping you. Certainly if you let jfw talk its
way through the rawrite it could be the problem.

HI Kirk,

Since I'm stuck using windows millenium and there is no dos mode, can you
suggest another way I could go about getting started with the zipspeak

Thanks!

Mathew,

Normally you want to use rawrite under a pure dos mode and the
Windows Me if you just load that and either use cd support which
is 1 or minimal boot which is 4 on their menus will descently make
you a place to use rawrite.

There is no problem rawriting to a floppy the image. You just need to
hit the control key or whatever jfw uses to shut-up speech immediately
after starting the rawrite. Raul also gave you a number of
suggestions.

Kirk,

I know that I had to use a completely Dos mode for my rawrite to
work right. the Windows me Startup disk will work fine for that
remembering which way the menu is set up though is vital cause
you can either get Dos support with cd rom support as well as well
as minimal boot. If the rawrite file is on the hard drive minimal boot
which is number four in their menu would work fine for Dos
operations such as this particular one. I am running Windows Me
also.

Hi Scott,

I followed your instructions using option 4 of my startup disk, then with no
sppeech feedback, I changed to the directory on my hard drive containing the
rawrite application as well as the bootdisk image. I then gave the
rawrite.exe dectlk.img a: command. The a drive began working and was done
in a few minutes. I then left the disk in the drive and rebooted. First I
got the normal bios beep, and then the floppy drive ran and I got a new
second beep which I'm assuming is the boot prompt. At that point I typed:
mount root=/dev/hda1 speakup_ser=0 rw

Then the a drive began working again for several mintes, and when it stopped
there was no speech, and control alt delete wouldn't even reboot the system
I had to manually power it down and restart.

I don't know what else to try at this point. Fro my memory of trying this
about a year and a half ago on the old laptop I had this was all I did and
the system booted easily with speech even if I got the partition statement
wrong.

What else can I try?

-Matthew

Well I just down loaded the image and looked at the config file. Looks
like your problem is probably your video card. Let me guess it's an
Nvidia or ATI rage card? If you say ramdisk vga=normal speakup_synth=xxxx
you should have better results. Distros have started to use the
framebuffer in the kernel by default. Unfortunately the mode that was
selected doesn't work on some video cards.

Let me know if you need any more help.

The only two other things I can think of is to:

1. redownload the speakup.i kernel image. Perhaps that is corrupted.
Try to use a command ftp program instead of a browser.

2. In some cases I've used rawrite2.exe instead of rawrite.exe and it's
worked fine.

matt. Try forgetting about all the parameters accept this 1.
When you get to the lilo prompt with your bootdisk image, just type: mount
