Installing arch linux on an Acer Aspire One?

Hi all,

   First attempt to install Arch Linux from a USB stick on an Acer Aspire One fails to talk on boot. it does boot, I had some eyes here last night to say that the login prompt was on screen, but didn't get to see if there was a dmesg indication of the audio device... I assume that this is the problem, that there is no driver for the audio device in the iso on the data stick.

   If anyone has used the Arch Linux installer  to install on an Acer Aspire One, I'd appreciate hearing how they went aboutit.

   Replying to my own message...

   Got some eyes and found that everything was working, just the volume was set to zero on the Speaker device... Had them turn up the volume and all seems to be working...

   Is the default ALSA volmume 0 for the Speaker device in the iso image? Doesn't seem right, since there is no speech on booting fromthe iso. You have to get sighted help to adjust the volume.

   Perhaps just an anomaly in my setup?

No, the default should be around 80%.
Apparently, I need to update the sound card initialization script on my
ISO, since it isn't unmuting one of the controls that you need.
Would you mind sending me your output from amixer?

I have found that every time I run NVDA from a thumb drive, that is the 
portable version, that the NVDA.EXE file that loads NVDA gets erased after 
the first use.
Strange indeed.
You get the portable version at the same place you get NVDA, I don't have 
the URL handy here.

The image is a "hybrid" ISO, meaning that it is suitable for either a CD
or a thumb drive.  I think that you just need to copy it to the drive
with dd.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to test this, because none
of my machines are set up to boot from USB.  Others haven't had any
trouble with it, though.
So just grab the ISO appropriate for your architecture.  It should work
for both kinds of media, out of the box.

I have found on some machines with Grml and this possibly holds  true 
for arch as well that the speakers are set to 0 but headphones are 
audible and usable.
try plugging in a set of headphones or external speakers to initially 
set the volume without site.
The Intel High definition audio codecs treat the headphones and speakers 
as 2 different mixer devices sometimes more.

   Thanks for that tip... It is in fact, the case... the Speaker device is set to 0, while the Headphones device is set to 70% on the iso... Easy to get access.

Yes, I use Grml's soundcard init script, adapted for Arch's init system.
Should I unmute the speaker device, since headphones work?
I'm really unsure, and input from others is most appreciated.
Personally, I always use headphones.

It depends on the config of the card, often headphones do mute the 
speakers, but this is not allways true.


Perhaps a little script to up the speakers might help and not break the 
existing config, not sure.
