Hello,
How c an I set espeakup to use my usb speakers?
I can plug in the usb speakers and use a tool to switch the soud output in
my x environment. All sound goes throw the usb speakers, but espeakup does
not.
How can I accomplish this?
I'm using arch linux.
Advice will be appreciated.
Tanks,
Alonzo

Espeakup is not using Pulseaudio, whereas GNOME is. You will need to
reconfigure the sound card that Alsa uses by default by editing
/etc/asound.conf. There may be a way to force eSpeak or Espeakup to
output through the USB speakers, but editing /etc/asound.conf is
probably the easiest thing to do. You can then use standard Pulseaudio
tools to move all the GNOME stuff where you want it.

applicatio accept espeakup.
Another strange problem I'm having is when I set it to use the logitech
Z205 everytime i start up my computer espeakup goes throw them now. Eve
those all sound goes throw my laptop sound.
Any thing I can do to fix this?

Try setting the alsa card for espeak rather than espeakup. Espeakup is
only an interface between the speakup screen reader and the espeak
speech synthesizer, which is what is actually generating sound. So
setting the alsa card specifically for espeak should solve the problem.

Ok can you go into detail on how to do this?

It should work the same way you set it for other applications. I
generally use Pulseaudio here, because I'm using GNOME and Orca nearly
fulltime, with only a little Speakup thrown in if I break something.
I'll get out my USB SoundBlaster box and try to figure out how to do
this without Pulseaudio, and post back here if I can make it work.

Hello,
I'll be waiting when ever you have time to detail a process.
Thanks,

The easiest method I found for making Espeakup use USB speakers is as
follows:
First, install the asoundconf package from AUR. Once the package is
installed, you can run as root:
asoundconf is-active
asoundconf list
This gives you a list of the available devices you can use as your
default sound card. Find the name of the device you want to use, your
USB speakers in this case and run, still as root
asoundconf set-default-card <name>
where <name> is the name listed in the asoundconf list command for your
USB speakers. The final step is to run
systemctl restart espeakup
which will force espeakup to run using your default sound card, which
you have set to your USB speakers. Now you can either run
asoundconf reset-default-card
as root if you no longer wish to use your USB speakers, or just leave
things as they are. For your GNOME stuff, pulseaudio should still take
care of most of the rest of your sound. Hope this helps.

I just found one caveat to my process. It would seem that the
instructions I provided don't survive a reboot. You may need to setup a
script that will do this for you if you want to always use the USB
speakers for espeakup.

Does your distribution have a global Alsa configuration file, similar to
~/.asoundrc? If so, I would write it there, then configure PulseAudio
separately.
For my USB head set, the configuration is:
pcm.!default front:Headset
which will work if placed in ~/.asoundrc (for the local user, naturally).

Yes, Arch understands both /etc/asound.conf and ~/.asoundrc. I'm not
sure that the global default should be set to USB speakers though, which
is what would be needed to make espeakup use them. It is probably
possible to put such a setting in /root/.asoundrc, and espeakup may not
have a problem with it. Either way, Pulseaudio will need to be
configured separately, although if it has already been without the USB
audio, it won't use it by default, and configuration of Pulseaudio would
then only be necessary if the default should be changed to the USB speakers.

Hello,
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try this method later on when I pull out
the laptop.
