Hi:
In Debian 7, speakup is using espeakup to run.
I'm trying to change to speechd-up so I can run toxin with it.
Here's what I'm doing:
First, I do an apt-get install speech-dispatcher
Everything seems to work ok. I edited /etc/default/speech-dispatcher to say "RUN=yes"
Then, i did apt-get install speechd-up.
I got a bunch of errors. Here's what happened (see below). Any ideas on how to make the system happy?

To work, speechd-up needs speakup and speakup_soft modules.
They are loaded automatically. If you don't want, type

Hi,
Can you try if your /etc/init.d contains speechd-up and, if yes, do, as
root: /etc/init.d/speechd-up start. or restart instead of start?
Tell me what's displayed.
Thanks,
Regards,

Hi:
Sorry for the confusion. I do have a file called "speechd-up" in /etc/init.d.
Here is what happened after I did /etc/init.d/speechd-up start
Starting Interface between speakup and speech-dispatcher : speechd-up[Sun May 19 20:52:57 2013] speechd: Configuration has been read from "/etc/speechd-up.conf"
Starting speechd-up...

They are loaded automatically. If you don't want, type
rmmod speakup speakup_soft
failed!
Thanks!

OK, here is a random guess. I don't use any of those packages, so I could
be completely wrong, but it sounds like it can't load the Speakup modules.
There are only a couple of reasons why. First, because they're already
loaded. If you still have espeakup installed, try removing it so it
doesn't load on boot as it also tries to load the modules. The other
reason could be because you don't have the modules in the first place, but
I don't think that's the case. I would first try removing espeakup and
stop all speech programs. Try starting them by hand, making sure the
speakup and speakup_soft modules are also removed with rmmod as the error
tells you. In other words, let the init script load the modules as
intended. If that doesn't seem to help, check /etc/modules and comment
out any speakup or speakup_soft lines and reboot. A reboot isn't strictly
necessary, but the idea is to clear any loaded modules and speech
programs. Of course that means you won't have speech at login until you
get Speech-Dispatcher working, but you can always reinstall espeakup. You
could also temporarily remove the execute bit on /etc/init.d/espeakup if
you don't want to completely remove the package. As I said, I don't use
those packages, so I could be totally wrong, but to me, it sounds like it
can't load the modules because they're already loaded and the script gets
an error.

Hi,
See if: ps aux|grep speechd-up
returns something. Then, try:
/usr/bin/speechd-up
and tell me the result.
