Hi all,
Perhaps a silly question, but based on the below information, how does one
install Debian if you do not have high speed access?
My present situation is that my dsl modem is damaged and I have not
replaced it.
I did not realize that the images needed took up so many cds.
suggestions?
Karen

Hi Karen,
I just noticed that the full CD set requires a whopping 52 discs!!! So I think it's more reasonable to download the network installation image (less than 200 MB), burn one CD, and let the installer download whatever it needs over the Internet.... Unless you want to purchase 52 blank CDs. Unfortunately we can't use the DVD images because your ThinkPad doesn't have a DVD drive.

Could you possibly send someone a USB hard disk to dump the data to?
Then you would only need the boot CD if your laptop can't boot from USB.
That's about all I could think of. It's a little smaller than 52 CD's
would be and easier to manage.

You don't need to burn all CDs. For most installations, just using the
first 1, 2 or at most 3 CDs is enough, and the rest (extremely little)
can be downloaded over the Internet.

How does one make this determination?
the links to image files included on the page you suggested makes no
breakdown that I can tell.
I may have a solution. I do have an external DVD drive which I am
*hopping* will be seen by this machine.
My friend is burning the 8 DVD images, which I am also assuming includes
the talking install.
I may be all set, but answer the question anyway, in case we have to burn
the cds instead.

See the installation manual

What page do you mean? The wiki or my website do not repeat what is said
on the official documentations.

Really, *no* need to burn all 8 DVDs. Just one will be more than enough.
> which I am also assuming includes the talking install.
Only if it is an image of Wheezy, and not Squeeze.

When I was experimenting with it a few days ago, I didn't need a lot of cd's. I just used 1. It was the
talkiing installer from
http://www.debian.org/devel/
and it had the information it needed on it to set up everything. I guess it would pull in packages from the
network to get the ones you needed. Then you wouldn't have to have all those discs.
I only have to say that it will take a very long time to do unless you replace your dsl modem before doing
it, but it should work.
Glad to help

All the more reason to have all the 8 DVD images in hand at first. I would
rather have more than I need to have to hunt via a network I may not have
in place.
I have been waiting many years to do this, want to start at the top of the
installation manual and work through the process.
