Hello,
I'm trying to setup speech-dispatcher with spd-conf as a normal user.
When I run the diagnostic tests, espeak, alsa and pulse respond.
When I save the settings and try an spd-say, I get the message 
from the dummy voice.  The log says it can't load the output module, 
even though espeak 
works in the diagnostic tests.

Any thoughts?

Hello,
I assume you're still using ArchLinux.  Turns out that the
speech-dispatcher package in [extra] is broken.  Well, not completely.
The problem is that it doesn't depend on pulseaudio, even though the
default configuration sets the audio output method to pulse.
A quick fix is to edit
~/.speech-dispatcher/conf/speechd.conf.
Find the line containing AudioOutputMethod, and change pulse to alsa.
I'll file a bug on the ArchLinux bug tracker later.

As a new convert to Arch, I can also add that speech-dispatcher will 
only work properly if you are in the group "audio." I wasn't a member of 
audio in Ubuntu, and Sox works in Arch without the audio group, but user 
mode speech-dispatcher does not.

Yes, you need to be in the audio group in order to access the sound
card.  I'd be really surprised if sox worked for a non-root user who
wasn't in that group.

Anyway, the dependency on pulse should be fixed, I believe.

The speech-dispatcher-git package addresses all this or I should say,
that it corrects the default output module situation and sets things
up so it can be run as a central service if you want.  I need to
update the install script so it will remind the person to add the user
to the speechd group.  I haven't had any problems with
speech-dispatcher-git so if there are any other issues with it, let me
know and I can fix that.  I own the speech-dispatcher-git package in
the Arch User Repository (AUR).

Maybe the package in Extra can be modified to include some of what I
do with the git version.  At least as far as doing in-place edits to
the config files any way.

I'm running speech-dispatcher as a user service and use espeakup on text 
consoles. I plan to install speech-dispatcher-git, since I was running 
it from git on Ubuntu before I installed Arch. I'll report any problems 
I find, and hopefully will be trying my own AUR package soon, as I'm 
missing a pretty nice speech synthesizer I used to have in Ubuntu.

The lines beginning with "ALSA lib" may be coming from spd-say (but I'm not certain of this).

If you take a look at the arch wiki pulseaudio page, they tell you how to run pulseaudio.  The idea is to get all your apps to funnel output into 
pulseaudio server.  In the case of alsa, you install a /etc/alsa.conf which essentially reroutes all alsa output to pulse.
So if your alsa apps such as espeakup are coded correctly, 
you should hear output whether your pulse server is running or not.
Currently, with my pulse server running I get no speech from espeakup and tons of error messages.  
However, by installing the portaudio-git package, I get speech output from the espeak command.

Kyle, do you have orca and gnome running?  If so, how do you get apps like rhythmbox to work without pulseaudio?

I do have Orca and GNOME running, but I haven't tried Rhythmbox. I'm 
still trying to figure out where in the world my system sound 
preferences are now, since they're not in system/preferences where they 
used to be in Ubuntu. I'll be trying to get pulseaudio working in the 
near future, I just haven't gotten to it yet; I'm still learning the 
system and how everything works. It is different from Ubuntu, and so far 
I can't even get the rsgames client working because of a python problem. 
Stay tuned. I'm still cleaning up little messes and making large new 
ones. LOL.

Yeah but that isn't the whole of it.  You can get into the volume
control and specify which theme is used for alert sounds but you
cannot control other sound events from there.  I understand there is
supposed to be a full preference thing there and is available in other
distros but for some reason, it is not found in Arch and when I asked
about it in the arch-general list, someone mentioned having to install
gnome-pulse or some such.  Frankly, I'm so paranoid about installing
anything to do with pulse, I don't wanna lose speech or have the big
performance hits other pulse users constantly run into.

I seem to have gotten pulseaudio working without any problems. I just 
installed pulseaudio and changed /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to get rid of 
the distortion. Here's the values I changed, which I read on the Arch 
forum somewhere:

default-sample-method=src-sinc-best-quality

And you'll need to uncomment this one:

default-fragments = 5

The original value was 4, but the post said to change it to 5, and I'm 
having no trouble with it at this point.

I see no reason now to still be paranoid about installing pulseaudio. 
It's becoming the default in more and more distros, and it's good to 
report any bugs that come up. That being said, this is the reason why I 
have come to love Arch. It has no default system, so it's possible to 
make choices based on personal preference rather than having choices 
made by distro X that may not fit individual needs.

I installed Lightspark from AUR so I could get Youtube and other similar 
things in the browser. Installing Lightspark pulled in Pulse. I only 
replaced the AudioOutputMethod directive in 
.speech-dispatcher/conf/speechd.conf to use pulse and noticed the 
distortion after I restarted speech-dispatcher, at which point I found 
and changed the settings I reported earlier. I have just installed the 
pulseaudio-gnome group as I write this message, which replaced 
gnome-media and gnome-settings-daemon, as well as pulling in a couple of 
additional pulse packages. I'll look at my volume control options, and 
I'll probably need to log out and back in, but I'll report my result. As 
for speech-dispatcher, once I changed the settings in 
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf and restarted speech-dispatcher, everything 
started working perfectly.

Hey, there is an error in your message below.  The
default-sample-method is being flagged as an invalid option in
pulseaudio when I attempt to start pulseaudio.  Actually, this option
never existed in the daemon.conf file to begin with.  I thought I
would add it to the file but no joy.  The only sample-method anything
in the file was a resample-method so I thought I would try that one
and just add the suggested value from your message here and I didn't
get any errors but the sound from speech dispatcher is still horribly
distorted.  Frankly, it is unusable in this condition.  I did change
the default-fragments to 5 and uncommented but at this point, I can't
get speech-dispatcher to sound any better than this; it's really
terrible.  Now when I use mplayer from a console to play music, that
seems to sound OK.  So I don't know what speechd's problem is.  I got
the distortion when I tried both the espeak and the swift-generic
modules.  If I run swift outside of speech-dispatcher, it sounds
great.  So it makes me wonder if speech dispatcher is fucking up some
place.

You're right. I believe I did make an error in my message. I do 
apologize for the confusion.

The correct line to change is the resample-method directive. It should read:

resample-method=src-sinc-best-quality

The other things are correct, and on my system, speechd is working 
perfectly. See the forum thread at

for more details about the problem and the corrections I used.

Another thing that may explain why you are still having problems: are 
you running speechd in user mode or as a system daemon? I am running in 
user mode, and am having no problems, but I haven't tried running it 
system wide, so I don't know if the corrections I found will work in 
system mode.

seems to be properly configured to run in either user or system mode. 
But I couldn't get speech-dispatcher-git to run in user mode and didn't 
try running it in system mode, although it constantly attempted to find 
its socket in /var, which is only supposed to apply if run system-wide. 
It wouldn't surprise me in this case to find that there are other 
problems with the speech-dispatcher-git configuration. Perhaps it's 
currently broken and will be fixed in the near future, or perhaps 
something has changed in the default configuration that I'm unsure how 
to fix to make it run correctly here.

I am using speech-dispatcher from git or I should say
speech-dispatcher-git from AUR.  Actually, I maintain this package in
AUR and pretty much configured it to run as a system wide service in
its default form.  For that, it works great under alsa.  When I was
testing all this pulse stuff, I did configure speechd to run as a
single user and commented out the DisableAutoSpawn entry at the bottom
of the conf file.  So after all that, I was starting speech dispatcher
under pulse control; I could tell that much.  I also should mention
that I changed the AudioOutputMethod to pulse also.  I also had
problems with the environment variable still being set even though the
speechd daemon had been stopped.  For some reason, even when the
execute flag is turned off on /etc/profile.d/speechd.sh, it was still
being imported when users login.  I'm not sure why that is happening
because I thought files in profile.d had to be executible in order to
be imported like that.  So I commented out the line inside that file
and successfully had speechd running with autospawn and all.  

Frankly, I much prefer to run speechd as a central service if
possible; it just seems more stable that way.  I had too many problems
getting speechd to autospawn properly last night with all this messing
about.

Also, the distortion did not go away when I attempted the
src-best-quality deal for the resample-method.  I'll look into it
again but for now, it's nice to have a stable system again with ALSA
instead of pulse for speech dispatcher stuff.  One nice thing with
pulseaudio-gnome and friends is I get a few more sounds than I used to
get so it may be worth getting pulse going but speech dispatcher is a
bloody mess right now.

More saga on pulse audio here.  I started messing with default sample
rate and at one point, I had really good sound from mplayer playing
music but as soon as I started speech-dispatcher, then it all went to
hell again.  In fact, the music playing through mplayer even got
distorted.  As soon as I killed pulse and restarted it again, then it
sounded good again.  Speech-dispatcher keeps screwing it up.  At one
point, I had pretty decent sound coming out of gnome along with Orca
using speech dispatcher but now I can't seem to get pulse back right
again.  I can't believe how volital pulse audio is.  No wonder so many
people have so much trouble with it.  It may be very complicated for
anyone who is simply trying to use it.  I thought alsa was bad at one
time but pulse really cuts the cake.

Another thing you need to do when running pulse is to
blacklist the snd_pcm_oss module.  This prevents any oss applications 
from
using the soundcard directly.  In arch there is an osp 
package which you install.  The osspd daemon becomes the link
between your oss apps and pulse.

Yeah, I have pulse going now and it is working sort-of.  This brings
me to ask some questions so I can get a better handle on it and maybe
I can stablize the volumes from session to session.

1. How can you easily control the volume of streams in the console
environment? Like control mplayer's volume and perhaps
Speech-dispatcher.  Interestingly enough, espeakup and espeak seem to
be working OK since I installed the asound.conf file with suggested
pulse settings. It seems like at different invokations of
speech-dispatcher, the volume will change and then become all
distorted and stuff.

2. Right now, it seems easiest for me to control levels in gnome under
the system/preferences/sounds panel.  If I get those levels right, I
can get rid of the distortion and get speech dispatcher to sound
pretty decent. Are the volume settings within gnome shared with other
console applications? From what I've seen so far, I would say, yes.  I
just wonder if that is to be expected.

3. How are others dealing with Speakup, espeakup, and espeak with
Pulse? When I booted after setting up pulse, I did not have any speech
at the console login.  I got some error while rebooting without any
speech and after I hit the enter key, the boot finally finished and I
still didn't get speech right away.  I ssh'd into the machine from my
laptop and looked over some logs and saw some errors concerning
osspd.  I then went back over to my desktop machine and found it up
and talking so dunno for sure just when speech came up over there.

4. What order should the daemons be loaded that affect pulseaudio? So
far, I have alsa, osspd and well, of course espeak but that surely
should come after the others.

I hope I'm not too wild with these questions but I'm trying to get my
arms around this pulse stuff and keep it stable.  I'm presently
looking over the pulseaudio wiki but that is still a bit foggy right
now.

with the download for linux file, which is for usb vinux the named CD to 
usb.bat. I follow the instructions and press sifran second o then says the 
os.iso found! but since I can not make progress. but when I press 1 it goes. 
o then I can select files. how much should be. but I'll dare to try with my 
Ubuntu 9.10 disc for later legge vinuxen of the stick or? To gjärna have 
vinux on usb and do not know if I have to fiddle too much is not today it 
has with my problems do I have ADHD too. it is good to know. so if I ever 
get angry or teeth, or nag, you know. it is good to know. for I have been 
poorly met from lists that are Swedish and I have lived with in / Bardia 
from snowy Sweden. I am using windows xp here with JAWS 9 and alva bc 640 
Infovox and eloqvense and old orpheus .. chub Dolphin

I believe there have been numerous patches, of which several improve
stability.  I have not had speech dispatcher crashes on my desktop
system for some time now and I'm using the latest git version to do
this.  I did have some issues for a vew days on my laptop but after
that, I got things straitened out on that 64 bit machine as well.  

This pulse audio stuff just seems so unstable and unpredictable to
me.  I like it in gnome where I can manage separate volume levels for
different applications at the same time and I seem to be able to hear
some more windows type sound icons but that distortion and static is
too much for me to bare.  I'm tempted to leave speech-dispatcher to
use alsa and let pulse run for gnome and other things that aren't
affected by it.

And I'm back. The first thing I notice is that "volume control" is now 
called sound, and it has all the options I expected. There seems to be 
an improvement in speech-dispatcher's responsiveness and overall 
performance over Ubuntu's implementation as well. So far, I'm impressed. 
There are a few issues with what seems to be a very fast dropout of the 
speech during very short letters, but it's not a showstopper for me. 
Perhaps there's another setting somewhere I need to tweak. 
Interestingly, I only started noticing this blip after I installed 
pulseaudio-gnome, which pulled in alsa-plugins and pulseaudio-alsa.
