Obtaining Debian

[Robert Spangler]

Hello,

I heard talk on here a little while ago that there is now an 
installation image with Speakup in it for the development/Lenny version 
of Debian?  Would this be a Speakup-enabled installation medium that 
downloads the packages from the internet to do the installation?  Would 
it pull from the development branch?  Where may I find this image and 
instructions for how to activate Speakup on it?

The image is 8MB only, so yes :)

Only hardware.  There are thoughts about having a dedicated image with
software speech, but it will most probably not be for Lenny unless
somebody works on it.

Only hardware.  There are thoughts about having a dedicated image with
software speech, but it will most probably not be for Lenny unless
somebody works on it.

I burned the ISO to a CD and am trying to get it started.  So, when it 
starts, I press tab and type speakup.synth=ltlk (because I am using a 
Double Talk LT).  How do I know when the prompt is up?  I have not been 
successful in getting it to start yet.  Will it automatically boot up 
another kernel if I don't act in time?

There is no timeout.

Having the debian installation CD beep at the prompt is currently in
discussion on debian-boot, there is a test image on

I probably forgot to mention: these images were built with the debian
speakup modules version 3.0.2+git20080517.dfsg.1-2, iirc there was a
crash issue in that version with some devices and ltlk.

I have the same results as Robert, and also with the mini-beep image.
The beep is extremely helpful to have, since it eliminates uncertainty
about when to proceed with key presses.

But neither image runs successfully with ltlk synth, unfortunately it
is the only one available here for testing.

I have updated

with the latest debian speakup modules (3.0.3+git20080724.dfsg.1-1),
which indeed fix the crash of ltlk.

Confirmation. Works correctly, at least as far as the prompt for
language choice. I went no further with it on this system at the
moment.

System here is an Intel 945, dual core P4 processor, SATA drive, 1 GB ram.

My friend just tried to boot it for me, who has sight, and told me that 
it says speakup.synth invalid option or something.

OK - the problem is that it is compiled as a module and not into the kernel.

Robert,

My guess is that the module is loaded in the initrd, the "initial ram
disk".

But mine comes up talking just fine here.

So you load the CD, hear the beep, tab and do speakup.synth=ltlk and hit 
enter?  I get nothing.  Do I need to wait a while?  I do hear the beep.

Yes, exactly. After hearing the beep, pressing tab, typing that
parameter and pressing enter, it took only about 15 or 20 seconds to
begin chattering away. The first question it asks is to select a
language, but at that point I did a hard reset instead of letting it
proceed.

Yes. It's a bit weird because I used the same syntax as when speakup is
compiled into the kernel, but even if the kernel complains about that,
the debian init scripts recognize the option and load the proper module.

It doesn't, that's my debian scripts that do.
