My answers to your questions were just answers, and didn't mean to
imply that grml is an unreliable distro. There are people who have
installed it to their hard drives, and are using it.
As for recommendations, you've already gotten 1 for ubuntu. I myself
have started out with slackware for 5 years, and have moved on to debian as of
about a year and a half ago.
The question of which distribution is best, is a very personal
question. If you can, try out whatever you can get your hands on, and
settle for whatever you find you like using best.
