Hi all. I've since acquired some firmware I want to attempt to flash onto this thing, so as to fix a rather annoying bug (or try to, at least). I ran the install.exe for the Dos drivers with
no problem; it dumped everything into c:\dtexp under~/.dosemu/drive_c. However, I can't get comchk.exe to find the Dectalk on ttyS0. I've check dosemu.conf, and so far the only relevant serial
port setting is which port to use (I've set it to /dev/ttyS0, which is the correct port). I then figured that the fact that the Dectalk wasn't being found on that port might have to do with
the Linux serial driver not being used vs the Speakup one, therefore I got everything working within Minicom as a test. Unfortunately, comchk.exe still returned the error about not being able
to find a Dectalk express on Com1. If I attempt to run the firmware loader at this point, would the Dectalk be found on the correct port, or do I have to get comchk to return success first?
Perhaps something in dosemu.conf I overlooked/forgot to check? I really don't want to somehow turn this synth into a paperweight, by perhaps managing to upload half its firmware to it. If
anyone that has done this before under Dosemu, could perhaps point me in the right direction as to what I'm missing, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

For firmware update, it would be much safer to boot your computer
with an actual DOS floppy and do the update, rather than trying to do
it with a DOS emulator in linux. Firmware updating is very low level
code, and you don't want it to brick your device!

Hi. If I had a set of Dos floppies and a Dos screen reader, I'd happily go that route. However, since I have neither, I'm pretty much stuck with having to do things this way unfortunately.

You can download some at:
http://www.bootdisk.com/
There is lots of other good stuff there too.
I bought some great utilities for just 4 dollars with PayPal, but there is
lots of free stuff too, like the boot disks.

Actually, you have both a gpled version of dos, and a gpled dos screen
reader available to you, and to anyone else for that matter.
Freedos is quite stable now, and you can run it from the cd as a live
system, without having to install it, provided that your machine
supports booting from cd-rom of course. Even if it doesn't, you could
still probably boot from cd by using smart boot manager. Failing that,
I do seem to recall the documentation for freedos stating that it is
possible to make your own floppy images. You can get freedos from:
http://www.freedos.org
Now for the screen reader part of things, I believe provox should
still be available from Chuck's site. In fact, let me check on that
... yes, it's still there:
http://www.mhcable.com/~chuckh/provox7.zip
. I can tell you with confidence that provox works nicely under
freedos with a doubletalk pc, and a bns. Hth.
