speakup serial ports

I can just try this, I guess. But can anyone spare me the pain?

Can I use ttyS4 in speakup for a hardware synth? Is speakup_ser=4 a 
valid option, assuming of course there actually is a ttyS4 and a synth 
on it?

A simple reminder:
Numbering in Linux starts with 0. 
So for example, if you have 2 serial ports on your computer, they are
ttyS0 and ttyS1.
So to ask if you can place a Synth on ttyS4 implies that you have 5
serial ports on your computer.

I haven't necessarily answered your question, but make sure that you are
counting correctly before you try to connect and then get frustrated
because you are not counting correctly.

Hi Steve,

Yes. I have a box with one serial port on the motherboard, and another 
on a PCI card. The first one appears as ttyS0 and has a braille display 
on it, and the other one appears as ttyS4, where I would like to put a 
synthesizer. Some software only allows ports 0 to 3, the first four 
ports, and I cannot recall whether that is the case with speakup.

Yep, looks like that's what we will do. The box is in a distant city 
though, so the user probably ought to be handy to pick up the pieces if 
necessary <smile>. 

Worst case: speakup cannot cope with ttyS4, so it reverts to ttyS0, thus 
hiding that port from brltty when it wants to load. No speech, no 
braille.  That's why I thought I'd ask first.

We only check 0 through four but actually we check the addresses
allocated to those ports so if you can get your seperate chard to sit
in the 0 through four address space you'd be okay.

Thanks. But now we have a dead system, so CPR measures are in order. 
Fortunately the user has a grml disk to rescue things with, so I think 
we can unscramble his eggs this time.

I see from the boot messages that speakup is already up and talking when 
the PCI slots are scanned and configured, so it's no wonder ttyS4 did 
not work.

Hi Chuck and all.

Chuck, it should still be possible for you to have speakup
modularized, and to load it once the pci serial card is
initialized. Admittedly, this wouldn't give you speech as early as it
would if speakup was in the kernel, but it should still work. Also,
Kirk did say that the addresses for ports 0-4 are scanned, so speakup
should still look for your synth on ttyS4 once the module gets loaded.

Hi Greg,

That's a possible path too. Thanks. But I think what we'll do first is 
put the synth on ttyS0 and the braille device on ttyS4 and see if we can 
bring it up that way. I imagine Kirk meant 0 to 3, the first four ports, 
instead of 0 to 4. This is awkward since the user is 35 miles from here 
with a dead system and my wife, who loves to talk, is on the only phone 
we have here.

Why not reconfigure Brltty to use ttyS4 instead?  Brltty comes up much 
later in the boot process, and can happily deal with pretty much any port 
you throw at it.  I've even used it once over a USB to serial converter, 
but it was flaky in that configuration.  Since Speakup talks to the 
hardware directly, it's really best to get Speakup working on the built-in 
serial port, as you are much more likely to succeed.

We foolishly tried the other way, and now must figure out a recovery 
strategy. I'm a lot better at figuring stuff out after it happens than I 
am ahead of time, unfortunately. Your suggestion is what we will try 
next.

Perhaps I'm being naïve, but could you not just specify speakup_ser=4 on the
boot command line? Of course, the PCI subsystem may hnot load in time...
Though iirc, you said you had modularized Speakup.

Garret,

In this case, the speakup drivers were compiled into the kernel, since I 
was not using an initrd and wanted speech from the start of bootup. So 
speakup_ser=4 was out. But I was able to put the synthesizer on ttyS0, 
and use ttyS4 for brltty, which is less particular about such things. 
One thing I have noticed though is that when the brltty driver is 
loaded, the "continuous read" feature is lost. I no longer have that 
system here, and did not look into it further while I had it. Otherwise, 
everything got resolved okay.
