No speech, no > braille. That's why I thought I'd ask first. Why not reconfigure Brltty to use ttyS4 instead? Brltty comes up much later in the boot process, and can happily deal with pretty much any port you throw at it. I've even used it once over a USB to serial converter, but it was flaky in that configuration. Since Speakup talks to the hardware directly, it's really best to get Speakup working on the built-in serial port, as you are much more likely to succeed.
