I've found myself liking the feature in acrobat reader under windows to get better formatted text output. On the other hand, catdoc seems to be able to deal with xls files, whereas antiword doesn't seem to be able to deal with them. So, the best of both worlds is to do what I did, and install both. As for html to txt, hitting p when on a page in lynx the cat will let you save the page as a txt file, and I suspect elinks, links the chain, and whatever else there is for the text console will let you do this as well.
