Hello list,
Does someone know of a pakcage that will allow me to convert pdf and .doc files to txt?
Also, html to txt conversions would be nice to.
Thanks,

for pdf files there's xpdf's pdftotext. just install xpdf and you
should get it. my only complaint is it pretty much murders any
formatting in the pdf file. I've found myself liking the feature in
acrobat reader under windows to get better formatted text output.

Not me, guy. I read the Bash man page each day like a Jehovah's Witness reads
the Bible. No wait, the Bash man page IS the bible. Excuse me...

For doc to txt, catdoc, and antiword are your choices, though antiword
seems to be more advanced then catdoc. On the other hand, catdoc seems
to be able to deal with xls files, whereas antiword doesn't seem to be
able to deal with them. So, the best of both worlds is to do what I
did, and install both.

As for html to txt, hitting p when on a page in lynx the cat will let
you save the page as a txt file, and I suspect elinks, links the
chain, and whatever else there is for the text console will let you do
this as well. Hth.
