Hello list,
I haev a problem,
I got someone to compile the kernel for me. I installed the .deb package, and it modified grub, I can boot to it, but I always see that its going into single user mode...
Any idea why its doing this?
I need to get it going, so I can install espeak... My hardware synthasizer broke, and I can't use doubletalk...
Thanks,

You may need to run telinit to change the run level on the system. On
Slackware, the normal multi-user run level is 3, so the following will
put my system in standard multi-user mode:

telinit 3

See 'man telinit' for more info.

HTH, and have a _great_ weekend (and everyone stay cool, somehow).

I stand to be corrected, but I believe the multiuser run level in
debian is run level 2.

Hello,
When I do telinit 2,
and then I do
ifup eth0,
it says something about the hardware flags, and that it is an unknown
device, and gives me an error that it can't find hardware type type 801 or
something like that.
any idea wy its doing this?
it just exited, and didn't bring it up.

Sounds like eth0 is your wireless card, in which case you'll need to
install the wireless-tools package under debian in order to use it. I haven't
setup wireless cards, so can't help you there. Since I believe you
have a wireless nic, and a physical rj45 nic, the system is probably
bringing up your physical card as eth1, so try using that
instead. Ultimately, good old dmesg will tell you what's what, though
I can see why you wouldn't want to have a sighted person reading that
to you, though you could save the output to a file, and look at it
yourself under windows.

Like I've said before in this thread, it is fairly simple to save the
dmesg output to a file on a floppy, even without sighted help, so that
you can then read that file under windows.

1. Boot your system, and put a formatted floppy into your floppy
   drive.

2. At the command prompt, type the following, pressing enter for each
new command:

mkdir /mydir
mount /dev/fd0 -t vfat /mydir
dmesg >/mydir/dmesg
todos </mydir/dmesg >/mydir/dmesg.txt
rm /mydir/dmesg
umount /mydir
rmdir /mydir

Now, reboot into windows, and enjoy.

Also, like I've told you before, some of the modules for your hardware
may not be getting automagically loaded. In that case, you need to
modprobe whatever you need by hand, and then add it to /etc/modules,
once you're sure you know the modules you need to load. If you don't
know what modules a piece of hardware requires, either google for the
info, or like someone else said, boot a livecd, figure out what
modules you need that way.

As was also mentioned, reconfigure the kernel to build support for
your card or cards statically, and then recompile, which should be a
straight-forward process, even for a newby. If you find the thought of
compiling a kernel scary, also remember what I've told you before, if
you want to be a true gnu/linux system admin, you'll need to know how
to configure and compile your own kernels.

um... Have you tried this.
Get a sighted person to sit down with you, who has no idea what a kernel is,
what linux is, or anything, and tell them to read the output of dmesg to
you.
It even sucks with grep. lol.
BTW, I'm not being rude.
I was sorta joking. Anyway, I'm working with a sighted person, because I
can't get a reader installed to work until the kernel is working, so it will

I think you should boot a live CD. Knoppix or grml. Those distros
detect your ethernet card and give you a network connection if they can.
then you can see what drivers are loaded, figure out which interface is
which, etc.

Don't you ever read any messages from the kernel? try dmesg or
/var/log/messages. The kernel messages should show any devices found
while booting. If your network code is moduler, then you will have to
run the network startup scripts by hand to see what messages get
generated. Another thing to try is recompile the kernel with the
network related options statically compiled then the startup messages
should surely reveal info about your network hardware. If the network
stuff is removable, then you'll have to stick with module loading and
the network startup scripts. I had to do similar things with sound card
support in my laptop recently because I had a hell of a time figuring
out what kind of soundcard I had. I finally Googled around with the
name and model of my Toshiba laptop to finally identify the chipset and
then I proceeded from there. It took me nearly a whole week to get that
part figured out.

I tried eth0, and greg told me that eth0 was probably my wireless card, and
to try eth1.

Try eth0. Remembber, Linux uses the computer number scheme, 0, 1, 2, 3,
etc., not 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
