Hello,

Gene Collins posted a message to this list with the CVS commands for 
obtaining the modified version of Speak Freely.  The first one (for 
logging in) worked; however, the checkout one says that the module 
doesn't exist:
ace@millions:~$ cvs 
-d:pserver:anonymous@linux-speakup.org:/usr/src/CVS checkout speak-freely
cvs server: cannot find module `speak-freely' - ignored
cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot expand modules
ace@millions:~$

Can someone tell me what's happening and what the proper module name is?

A Linux Laptop including speech?

Hi everyone,
I realize that laptops have been discussed in the past, but I am unsure if 
my specific goals were addressed.
for a rather unusual reason I must obtain a laptop that will have 
functional clear speech and allow me to work as I normally do with my 
computer.  I do not have a Linux DOS as of yet, but would need to find 
this with the absolute least amount of tampering possible because I am 
short on time.
I prefer dectalk speech, but to be honest I have not heard the synthesizer 
alternatives for Linux.  I am not a windows user, so do not want a duo 
system unless 
it is a Linux Dos one, or a Linux mac one if this is even possible.
I also have a limited budget grin.
Any ideas as to where i might begin?
I am also weighing the option of a mac laptop, or a windows one stripped 
down to work  with DOS only.
Any wisdom welcome on or off list.

several weeks.  The idea is to create a very basic system so I can still 
do some work related tasks,  use wordperfect, go online and tellnet to my 
shell account,  etc.
Thought I might seek a tad more since I must have something, but that is 
the basic goal here.

You could use a desktop without the monitor, placed across the room, and use 
a wireless keyboard.
You will not be able to access CDs, but that may not be an issue for you.

No drivers are installed with the Giration, so, is it the BIOS's ability to use a USB interfaced wireless keyboard, or, the OS???

I believe I have used my wireless keyboard in DOS.
If you have U S B in DOS, and this will depend on the cMos settings.
Sometimes, in older cMos, you have to turn on a setting like:
USB legacy

You could do it easier and much cheaper with the system you have by using a Giration wireless keyboard which one can easily use laying down placed 
across one's hips/lap/stomach...  There are models with 30 and 100 foot range, and the 100 is conservatively rated.

You are wrongly assuming that i can lay on my back, I cannot. and  that i 
can be in close enough position for the wireless to  work, none of this is 
the case.
Believe me, If i had alternatives outside of the laptop, I would have 
stated those.

But Karen, what makes you assume that you are aware of all of your 
alternatives?  Are you certain that you are fully aware of every possible 
way of doing things?

If you can't use a keyboard that can transmit for 100 plus feet (that's 
one hundred), which is definitely an unusual situation, since you expect 
to be able to power and provide internet access to a laptop, maybe there 
is yet another alternative.
Although, not being able to be within one hundred non-line-of-sight feet 
of 
a computer which you can setup, is indeed unusual.  They are not talking 
about IR (line of sight) keyboards here, but of RF keyboards.

However, if you must have a laptop, go to linux-laptops.org, and look for 
the one that best does what you want.

A laptop it must be, as distance and angel are an issue for me here.
Although I did not see firmly if such worked in DOS in any case?

Perhaps you could put Oralux on a CD and then go to your local computer
store and see if a laptop would come up talking.  Unfortunately, you would
be paying for Windows etc.  There might be some small companies that would
sell you a laptop with Linux preinstalled, but I don't know what they are.

Also, if you have to have a laptop, you could maybe find a rent-a-center 
from which you can lease one.
I looked into this once, and I believe it was going to be about 50 dollars 
per week.
You could run GRML on it, from a CD.

I think one of the reasons that you're not getting many answers is that 
there aren't too many alternatives to just going out and buying a laptop 
and installing linux on it. The only thing I can suggest is that you try to 
find a used laptop because neither speakup or emacspeak require much 
processing power.

I'm running DECtalk and emacspeak on a laptop with an  original pentium 150 
Mhz with 56 Mb of RAM. I also have speakup on it but it's configured to use 
an external hardware synth.  Anyway, I'm real happy with it and now-a-days 
you can pick up a machine like that for practically nothing because it 
won't run Win XP.

Well, I have a Pentium M12d by Hitachi and unfortunately, it is a dog.
It only has 16meg of memory and I'm hard pressed to find additional
memory for it.  I got it for what I thought to be a pretty good deal a
couple years ago.  It's fun to play around with but it sure is slow.  It
runs Slackware reasonably well but I really need to find that extra
memory since Linux generally likes the more memory, the better.  I
really like the Hitachi keyboard; I think it is the best layout I've
seen in a laptop.

If you've got the hd space, why not make a swap file or a swap
partition? It won't be as fast as physical RAM but it will still allow
you to run more software at a time.

Right. 16M of RAM is probably pushing the lower limit even for linux. I 
would think RAM for that thing would be expensive even if you could find it.

Like I said though, I am very happy with my Pentium 150 Mhz with 56 Mb RAM. 
With the external synth, it rocks. Even with software speech, it's very 
tolerable.  I mean, I use it all the time for editing text checking my 
mail, and as a terminal emulator.

If I have to find out why somebody's machine has lost it's network 
connection,  I connect my laptop to the serial port, run kermit,  log in 
and do my diagnostics. It works great.
