Hi people,

For some days now, I have had no new postings reported when doing "apt-get update" for the unstable packages. That seems
strange to me, but I find no obvious errors on my system to account for it. Is anyone else following unstable closely,
and are you getting productive apt-get updates this week?

Thanks,
Chuck

I am running Unstable and have had no trouble updating. There have been
relatively few new packages added, but the upgrades are about the same as usual.
However, since packages.debian.org is down, it is impossible to get some info
about packages, for example changelogs, before installing them.

HTH,
Lorenzo

Hmm .. I am following mirrors.kernel.org/debian, as well as the merrilat site, and it has been at least four days since
apt-get update has retrieved anything except the signature data. Very strange.

I wonder if it may be possible that mirrors.kernel.org isn't synchronizing. I
am following debian.hands.com and debian.secsup.org and they seem to be updating
without any problems.

HTH,
Lorenzo

I think I will plug them in and see what happens.

Lorenzo,

Could you please show me the lines in your sources.list that address those sites? My first guess did not work! <smile>

Those references pulled in a lot of stuff, and my old references still just tell me "hit" on the apt-get update output
screen.

Thanks. Maybe mirrors.kernel.org and the merrilat site are both taking a holiday.

One useful resource I've found is the debian mirror checker. It keeps a
list of mirrors and how recently they synchronized. There are actually
two of these. Mirror.debian.org/status.html doesn't seem to track as
many mirrors. It doesn't list much info on the main page but each one
has it's own page with details. The other is www.debian.de/dmc/today/
which is the one I prefer. It lists more mirrors and shows the time each
was updated right on the front page.

After checking both lists for a few days I noticed that
debian.osuosl.org was almost always the very first one on the list. If
it isn't on top of the list it's second or third. That's the one I'm
currently using.

It would seem that mirrors.kernel.org hasn't been updated for a week
which is a little hard to believe. That checks out to be correct though.

Another tip, especially if you're on a dialup connection, install the
version of apt in experimental. When you do an apt-get update, instead
of downloading the entire Packages and Sources files it gets small
patches and applies these to the existing files to make them current.
This saves a lot of time on a slow link.

HTH,
Justin

Justin,

Thanks for those tips. I had evidently changed the distro name from "unstable" to "sid" at some point, and changing it
back again to "unstable" on the mirrors.kernel.org references allowed lots of info to be retrieved. So whether that was
the real problem, or just coincidence, I can't say. But other folks showed me their links that were working, and they
all used "unstable" instead of "sid" and were working fine.

Chuck.
