I had evidently changed the distro name from "unstable" to "sid" at some point, and changing it back again to "unstable" on the mirrors.kernel.org references allowed lots of info to be retrieved. So whether that was the real problem, or just coincidence, I can't say. But other folks showed me their links that were working, and they all used "unstable" instead of "sid" and were working fine.
