I have a computer hooked to my network that I am planning on installing
Linux onto.
It only has a 25 GB hard drive, and I want at least 20 GB for FTP files.
I have been thinking of trying Debian since it appears that it may take less
disks to download.
I only want Linux right now for an FTP server.
Since I have not heard otherwise, I understand that Debian is not ready for
prime time with speakup, so I guess I must go with Fedora, but that takes 3
ISO's, unless I can get an FTP server going with only the first ISO.

Can someone advise me here?
Thanks.Glenn

If you wish to use Debian there is a cd image out there that will you
to install the Sarge release on to your machine with Speakup.

http://people.debian.org/~shane
Look there for the install cd.

Hi Glen and Tom, et al,

I just installed Debian on a new system, using a 3-floppy set to get started and everything else was installed from the 'net. It has speakup in the kernel, so it talks all the way through the install.... beautiful.

As for space requirements, debian has always been consistently smaller than redhat/fedora for a base install since redhat/fedora installs so much by default.

PLEASE, NO FLAMES about "my-distribution-is-better-than-your-distribution". Just my experience, for what it's worth.Debian's 'apt' package manager makes it extremely easy to install 'just" the packages that you want.

Hi Glenn,

I have just mailed you the disk images separately, so as not to clutter the list. They are probably available for ftp download somewhere, but I'm not sure.

For the record, a Server Class install of the Speakup Modified will take
about 2 Gb. Choosing Server Class will provide what you need for an ftp
server, and it will provide most of the console utilities you're
accustomed to with an "everything" install. Yes, that's how fat the gui
environment has become.

Janina,

Probably way behind on this, but as I run both Fedora and Debian
and have just installed a base system of deb on a 12G drive I
thought I would throw in my 2 cents. My install was only 435 meg.

Hello Keith & Janina,
I am at the network prompt, and I am using a router on a cable modem.
It did not detect the dhcp host, and I am wondering if it should
automatically.
Or should I enter the IP address for the router?
I am trying to do a network install.
Thanks.

only if you have a dhcp server. You may have to manually add the
ip and gateway.

No question, Keith. A minimalist installation is not a criterion on
Fedora. On the other hand, I'd wager more "just simply works out of the
box."

PS: I have both here as well.

Debian works fine with speakup, just the iso isn't that great. You can always
examine the buggs for the testing release which need to be fixed before it
becomes stable. Few if any problems related to speakup here on my 800 MB hd.
