Maybe some of you will remember several months ago I had problems
accessing the Fedora ftp content referenced in the speakup-modified howto.
Well, the mystery of ftp and lynx has returned.
I did installs of FC2 on both my desktop and my laptop using the same set
of installation isos. Yet on my laptop I can access and download from ftp
sites using lynx, while on my desktop I cannot, though I can do so just
fine with wget and links the chain. I have tried placing the .lynxrc from
the laptop on my desktop and have also tried placing the .mailcap from my
laptop on my desktop--to no avail. The /etc/mailcap should be and appears
to be the same on both machines.
I haven't edited my lynx.cfg on either machine; my firewall setup is the
same on both machines.
Any ideas of other files to look at?
Thanks.

Does Lynx just sit there, or does it outright tell you it can't connect to the ftp server in question? Are you able to access other websites with no problems?

Yes, I can access other sites; it appears to be just ftp.
Lynx just sits there, and then when I hit ctrlG it says it can't access
the document.

Have you checked your Iptables rules to make sure you're not blocking any traffic from port 21? Also, assuming its not the firewall...Try going to an ftp site that you know you can access with
Lynx on another machine, then try from the machine in question. It could very well be that the site (s) you're trying to access don't get along well with Lynx. The Speakup ftp site is a good
example of this.

Well, as I just posted, I already solved this--thanks!!!
But of course one of the first things I did was try the same site with
both my laptop and my desktop--that's how i knew the problem was specific
to my desktop, because sites that worked on my laptop didn't work on my
desktop.
Now all is working fine, but obviously something is working slightly
differently with my desktop to make PASSIVE to absolutely be required to
be set to TRUE.

Hi. This just a guess, so I probably shouldn't post it. Is the fire
lwall different from the laptop and the desktop?

Since the ftp site was mentioned, I tried that on both computers and had
absolutely no problem accessing
ftp://linux-speakup.org
and all its directories; I even downloaded.
So here's my suggestion: anybody who is having trouble with this
particular
site might try changing FTP-Passive to TRUE in your lynx.cfg. Of course, I
was having trouble with ftp in lynx in general, but on my laptop, where I
had no other ftp problems, I also could access speakup without changing
PASSIVE to TRUE. Why this would be necessary for one computer on a network
and not another I can't say, but it might make the speakup site work for
some people.
Remember to type the url just as typed--don't put an ftp. after the ftp://
or it won't work.
Hth somebody.

Well I still don't understand WHY this worked but it did.
I changed FTP-Passive to TRUE. I don't quite know why this is necessary on
one machine and not on the other, but it works.
