To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Hi all.
I am wondering whether anybody has managed to get a deacent set up with DECtalk
software, ALSA, and the dmix plugin via asoundrc, to allow other apps to play
sound as well as your speech synth? I took an example asoundrc from the ALSA
wiki, put it in place, and made entries to allow the alsa-oss library to be
available from login, however it doesn't seem to be satisfactory.
If anybody is interested in what I did, please let me know and I will send you
the relevant information.

Luke, you haven't told us what sound card you are using. The
multichannel capabilities depend a lot on the card. I have had it run
just fine with softDec and the sb live. I don't tend to use asoundrc
though I have a one liner script for setting the virtual device
volumes for mixing.

Ah my apologies. It is simply a standard AC97 card in a ThinkPad R50 notebook.
I am quite sure this card does not have multi-channel capabilities.

Hmmm, Luke, that's the same chip in the Thinkpad T30 that I just turned
in to my previous employer.
I was not able to multichannel on that chip.

Isn't dmix for oss? Am I wrong?
PS: I have the ability to play multiple sound objects at the same time,
but have not tried any of the soft speech recntly. I was having
dificulty with exactly this issue using Flite last summer with my
laptop.
