Just got a couple of quick questions as a newbe. 1. when I upgraded from slackware 9 to 10, I only have one tty instead of the normal six. I thought I'd only have that problem during setup, so didn't wory about it, but still got it even after the reboot, everything else seems to work just fine. Hi. You're sending confusing and wrong information about how to start an X session. If you don't have a display manager running, you would use startx from the console. If you have a display manager such as gdm running, you would log in to the graphical console just the same as a normal user login. Big hint, gdm stands for Gnome Display manager. If you want to use both, you will have to make sure the startx command starts the X session using a display not managed by the display manager. Gdm beeps when it is ready for a user to login. The default window manager for Gnome is metacity, not gdm. Hi. Unless you build and install festival , you aren't going to get any speech from gnopernicus. The default voice for Gnopernicus uses festival. When I played with Slackware 10.0 recently, I noticed their wasn't a festival package. If you have the commercial DECtalk software, you can gry installing it and rebuilding the gnome-speech package. Another option is to get freeTTS working and rebuild gnome-speech so it can use it. To start gnopernicus, press alt-f2 in the X console and just type gnopernicus. You don't need any options.
