Hi all, glad to be back after a long unwanted break...
Just got a couple of quick questions as a newbe.
1. when I upgraded from slackware 9 to 10, I only have one tty instead of
the normal six. I thought I'd only have that problem during setup, so
didn't wory about it, but still got it even after the reboot, everything
else seems to work just fine.
Also, how do I start x and thus gnopernicus? I have already chosen gnome
as my window manager.
Thanks all

Cheereo!

Are you using the right alt key when trying to change consoles? Only the
left alt key works for that purpose, not the right one.

Is there a reason why the right key isn't supported? It just seems like
something you'd do as a programmer.

Take care,

to start x, just run startx. when all activity stops ( your pc speaker
may beep, I'm not sure) type your username. then hit enter, type your
password, then enter again. if gdm is in fact your default window
manager gnome should come up.

Hi. You're sending confusing and wrong information about how to start
an X session.
If you don't have a display manager running, you would use startx from
the console. If you have a display manager such as gdm running, you
would log in to the graphical console just the same as a normal user
login. Big hint, gdm stands for Gnome Display manager. If you want to
use both, you will have to make sure the startx command starts the X
session using a display not managed by the display manager.
Gdm beeps when it is ready for a user to login.
The default window manager for Gnome is metacity, not gdm.

yes, but in the default configuration for slackware 10 you don't have
a display manager running as far as I can tell. so therefore startx is
the best way to go.

There's no need for a login to an x session from running startx.
x will come up straight away.
well after a bit of farting and drive noise haha.
but get it right.

have you configured a speech synth to work with gnopernicus yet? if so
, run test-speech from the console and if speech works, after gnome is
started press alt-f2 and type gnopernicus.

Hi. Unless you build and install festival , you aren't
going to get any speech from gnopernicus. The default voice for
Gnopernicus uses festival. When I played with Slackware 10.0 recently,
I noticed their wasn't a festival package. If you have the commercial
DECtalk software, you can gry installing it and rebuilding the
gnome-speech package. Another option is to get freeTTS working and
rebuild gnome-speech so it can use it.
To start gnopernicus, press alt-f2 in the X console and just type
gnopernicus. You don't need any options.

Hope this helps.

Actually, I think the best way to go is to set your default run level
to 4, and get your default display manager started that way, and then
just login as you would in the text console. Also, if you're sure your
default display manager is gdm, then you should be just fine.

Greg

Actually, the left alt key works for tty1 through tty12, while the
right alt key works for tty13 through tty24. To log into any of these
tty's, they must be defined in /etc/inittab. HTH and have a _great_
day.

it's the interface to several different speech synths. if you grab
speechd-up from www.freebsoft.org you can use the two programs to get
software speech with speakup using flite or festival. If you want I
have slackware 10 packages of all the required software here.
