Lynx & SSL

I thought the lynx distributed with slackware 8.0 was SSL enabled.
Apparently out of the box it does not do that.  I just tried it and got an
error saying that https was not supported.  Do I have to change some configs
to do this or do I have to rebuild the program? I do have the openssl
package installed so that part should be ready.

Any ideas?

Hi
   You need to build a later version of lynx, one of the 2.8.4 betas for SSL. For some reason, it wasn't included in slackware, but I don't know why. I've got a package of lynx 2.8.4pre.2 with SSL for slackware 8.0. If anyone wants it, let me know.

Wow. Not good.

Not sure when lynx began shipping with ssl, but it's been some time. It 
happened after the U.S. lifted restrictions on encryption technology 
exporting--and that was back in 1999, I think.

My lynx, which came via the Redhat 7.1.94 install is 2.8.4rev1. The lynx 
home page at www.lynx.browser.org lists 2.8.3 as current, and that should 
include ssl. What version do you have? Do:

	lynx --version

We have:

Lynx Version 2.8.5 Dev.2

Shellworld is running


freeBDS which I haven't seen referenced here and am assuming this is yet
another flavor of linux.

Actually believe there's an even more current version because seems that
the administrator of Shellworld had to backout of a version of lynx which
is buggy.

Slak 8.0 comes with lynx 2.8.3rel1. I generally like slackware for
structureal things but I do wonder about some of the versions of some of
the included packages. They were pretty current on other things but I
wonder if Lynx slips under the rug a bit or something.

freebsd is a bsd.  Bsd is another unix variant of which there are freebsd
openbsd netbsd and bsdi.  There might even be another that I do not know
of.  They use a lot of the same applications as found on most systems
running gnu/linux.  The kernels are very different however.

Interesting on the lynx version. I guess I'll go look.

The other item you asked about is probably mislabled. Do you actually mean 
FreeBSD? That's a variant of Berkeley Unix, so not linux but related.

Well, lynx is definitely slipping under the rug on RH. The Roswell 
distribution doesn't install it by default, though the rpm is there to 
easily remedy this.

Nope, FreeBSD is a different os entirely.
Is free like linux but runs a different kernel which speakup will not work
with so site help will be needed when doing an install of this one.
Only plaid with it for a couple hours before I had to scrap the machine
but what I saw it wasn't too different from linux.
Things did seem to click along quite nicely  with it.
