Anyone know what is happening in Debian Lenny?

[Gaijin]

	Just did a tasksel install of the X11 desktop environment in
Debian Lenny, and everything was working fine until I rebooted.  I was
left with the usually silent gdm screen, so had no idea what was happening,
and now I have  access to only one text console now.  Those F-wits at
Debian have really F'ed up my computer.  Any Debian gurus out there know
how to make Debian respawn the normal number of text consoles, so I
don't have to do a full reinstall from Etch, a'la the Mickeysoft method?
I can't even consult a man page at the same time I'm working on
something any more.

I'm running gnome under lenny/sid right now with no problems, though I
must admit I did my tasksel for gnome a while ago. Spawning up of
consoles is controlled in /etc/inittab, I would start by looking there
first. I'd say you're being dropped into single user, runlevel 1, but
that's not the case if you have gdm coming up, as far as I know.

	That was the first thing I checked when I got a text console
working.  It was my stewpid keyboard at fault, with it's function key
toggle.  Not entirely sure what it does, beyond turning the keys on and
off, but that was the culprit preventing me from using the function
keys..  Sure wish they still made the Omnikey line of keyboards.  I
really loved that puppy...

Hello, I actually had one of these old IBM keyboards, I found it for four dollars at a thrift store.
it lasted for about six months before I got tired of it and got my apple keyboard.

I've had one of these for about 6 or 7 years now...it was mainly used 
my linux workstation, which has now been pretty much relegated to 
basic server duties, so the keyboard doesn't get used all that 
much...but I go back to it every once in a while, really like the 
feel.

I haven't read the links yet but I'm guessing it's talking about the old IBM 
model M keyboards.
There is actually a company that baut the design from IBM and makes new 
keyboards with the same feel using the Buckling Spring technology.
They also have keyboards with rubber dome technology for a more quiet sound 
but I'd want the loudest click I could get.
They even have USB keyboards as well as PS2 models.

keyboard from them yet. I probably should *giggle*.
If your looking for a 104 key keyboard so you can have the 3 windows keys 
you probably want the custimizer 104.

Although the space saver model visually looks like the original pearl white

technology even though it only comes in black so that I could have the

He does, I think in the first article especially, although he mentions 
them in all of them.  The second two talk about various spinoffs of those, 
and several strange and even stranger keyboards and interface devices.

Though that site is a bit expensive...I scored mine (has a 
manufacturered date of 1984) for free from a pile of useless computer 
junk that was being tossed, and I've seen them go for a few dollars at 
goodwill/other used crap stores.

Hey, I don't know. I'm running unstable, and orca and gnome and all were
running fine. But a couple of weeks ago there was a major upgrade and I
basically lost my Xwindows completely. when I try to fix it, I get "broken
packages". Haven't gotten real upset about it because (1) I use linux
mostly in text console and do my gui stuff in Mac and windows; and (2) if
you're going to run unstable you have to be prepared for just about
anything!!! Of course that doesn't solve your lenny problem but maybe it's
related somehow.

Why: does control-z no longer work to suspend?

How about the screen program to have virtual virtual consoles?

As for a solution: edit your /etc/inittab file, and add more consoles.  At 
least, that's how it is done if you're not in an X environment.

The function keys do not limit your virtual consoles: I have only 12 
function keys, but a year or so ago I set my inittab to give me 24 virtual 
consoles.  The second set of 12 are only accessible via the alt-leftarrow 
, alt-rightarrow sequences, from the first and twelfth virtual consoles 
respectively.

Afaik, you can have up to 256, although how exactly one would manage all 
of those is beyond me.

	I recall from back in my DOS days that I could accessfunction
keys from F13 on by adding both shift and control keys into the mix in
different combinations.  But then again, I was using an Omnikey Ultra
keyboard, which was pretty fancy for that day.  It had DIP switches in
the back that allowed you to configure the thing for a Dvorak layout,
re-assign the capslock and shift keys, and a slew of other neat tricks.
If you can even find them, they're now going for $200 and up, used, and
cost only $70 when they were new.  Anyway, it might only take some
editing of a keyboard config to make F13 on accessible with the addition
of the shift and control keys.

Heh.  I justed this some more, and the altgar key (right alt) can access 
13 through 24.

No--that would certainly be a feat.  I mean that as a modifier for the 
function keys: altgar-F1 will get you TTY13; altgar-F2 will get you TTY14, 
etc..

Ah, I see. If one is running x, would ctrl+altgar+fx work this way as
well, just as ctrl+leftalt+fx do for f1-12?

Have you tried using the right alt key with your function keys to see
if these key combinations get you to tty13-tty25?  On my Slackware
system, left_alt+functionkey<n> lets me jump to virtual terminal <n>
and right_alt+functionkey<n> lets me jump to virtual terminal <n>+12
to get me to terminals 13-24.  Look up the man pages for chvt and
deallocvt for more terminal management.  The screen program can also
be useful at times--it sets up several 'screens' on a single virtual
terminal among other things.  See the man page for screen.  I believe
key combinations can be mapped to jump directly to even more terminals
if 24 are not enough.  I currently have 25 virtual terminals set up in
my inittab.

That is the altgar combination which I posted about finding later in the 
day.

Yes, screen is marvelous.  Even better than its multiple sessions, is the 
attach detach feature set.
