I guess when I installed Debian Lenny testing last week, the provided
kernel apparently did not come with modules to support framebuffer
support. The config shows many fb options as yes or modular and the
framebuffer-support option is set to 'y'. But there is no /dev/fb
device shown and when I did a find . -iname fb* inside the
/lib/modules directory, I found nothing.
When I look in aptitude for linux-modules, all I find is
linux-modules-2.6.26-1-xen-686 and that is incompatible with my
version; the name is slightly different and it created a separate
directory in /lib/modules with the xen in the name; it does have the
fb modules but I think that xen package is for a 2.6.26.8 kernel if I
read things right. I would think there should be a linux-modules for
the original 2.6.26-1 image. Am I missing something or what?

Well, I need to update my post some. I looked at the linux-image
package and further at /lib/modules/2.6.26.... directory and I do
actually find a couple modules who start with 'fb' in the video
subdirectory. But still no /dev/fb device. If this kernel was
prebuilt with the options as shown in the related config file in
/boot, then I would expect the kernel to include framebuffer support.
If that is the case, then how does one get the framebuffer support to
be active so the device exists. Do I have to mess around with udev
some how?

No, you don't have to mess with the udev configuration. Frame buffers
are activated in your initramfs by default. Are you certain you are
using an initrd? It is at that point that your devices are detected,
acpi is begun, modules for ide, sata, and usb are begun, along with
frame buffers by default. It looks to me like you are not actually
executing an initial ram FS.

I'm sure the initramfs is being used because when I added the spkout
module to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, speech came quite a bit
earlier in the boot sequence. The only other thing I can possibly
guess is X had not been installed at that time. I am now in the
process of installing gnome (I chose the entire gnome desktop) and
perhaps more x stuff is needed to fully use framebuffers. I've been
anxious to get gnome/orca going anyway so am about to give up on
getting framebuffer support going in the plain text console
environment. Oh, the 'most' option is specified in the initrd config
file so you're right; framebuffers are supposed to be chosen but I see
no mention of fb or framebuffer in dmesg at all. So I really don't
have a clue.

Sometimes you need a boot parameter to get the frame buffer going, or
if it is modules you need some parameters. There are various versions
of framebuffer, so this will depend on which ones you have. I usually
build the frame buffer into the kernel for that reason.

Try modprobe uvesafb. I don't know if Debian uses that yet, but it's
pretty awesome. The best way to do it is modprobe uvesafb mode=your
native resolution (e.g. 1280x1024):32

You don't need to have x installed to get framebuffer support going. I
was using framebuffer for a number of years, before ever installing a
single x component on my system.
