Hello,
I was wondering how much experience everyone have had with cygwin and jaws.
When I try to select packages, it's not accessible at all. Is there a way I can do this without fighting with the installer?
Thanks,

Sure is.
If you know what the package you want to install is called open up
/etc/setup/installed.db with notepad and the list is in alphabetical order
just put your package in the slot it needs to be in like this:
My_package my_package.tar.bz2 0
Then run the setup program again and it will update it to the latest version
and there you go.

As far as I know, this is an issue with the cygwin installer, and
isn't limited to jaws only. Another, easier in my opinion solution,
is to deselect all packages, and just select the ones you want by
pressing spacebar on them to check them for installation.

hello,
It's not downloading the packages after I edited the list.
I'm not even able to get a list of packages. I just see some radio butttons,
view and a checkbox.

Try tne new 1.7 setup. It's supposed to have command line options and
should be easier to use but I haven't tried it. You can install
manually although that's not recommended. You can also just install
everything and not worry about selecting individual packages.

I installed cygwin but with Windoweyes not Jaws. I'd just install
everything and not worry about selecting packages. When I installed with
windoweyes, I never was able to find a way to get the right selection made
to install everything using speech though I'm sure there must be a way; I
used my braillelite and pressed andheld the cursor routing button in front
of the first letter of my selection until the word changed to "install".

hello,
I don't have a braille display, sadly. I think my best bet is to look for
the older version people were talking about.

If you have Jaws, you can use the jaws cursor to find the list of
packages, and use the mouse buttons to click on them to change them
from default/install/update/remove as you need. This has worked well
for me in the past, though isn't the easiest thing to do.

In most countries selling harmful things like drugs is punishable.
Then howcome people can sell Microsoft software and go unpunished?

Ok. Taking the latest cygwin setup.exe, and hitting next a bunch of times, we eventually get to the
screen with the radio buttons - curr, prev, etc. Keep it on Curr.
Route jaws to pc, go down. The list is there with everything closed by default. if you click on a category,
it'll open and you can see the packages below it. For example,
Devel.
To scroll down, just click on the scroll down symbol as reported by JAWS.
If you click on the word next to the package (skip, or the version number), it'll switch among the various versions or skip.
If you click on the word default next to a category, it will
cycle from default, install, reinstall, uninstall, and back to default.
Hope this helps,
Tyler

Umm, since 1.7 is more accessible and 1.5 is about to go into permanent
deep freeze, why? At least 1.7 has command line support which 1.5
doesn't. Yes, you can install everything with the mouse cursor in 1.5
with Window-Eyes. Granted, 1.7 is still considered in beta and I
haven't tried it, but since that is the future of Cygwin and is a lot
more *nix-like, why would you want to use something older? The only
reason would be if you have Windows 95 or 98 which will not run 1.7. If
you have 2000 or newer, 1.7 makes more sense.
