Hi everyone,
I would like to set up a dual boot using Fedora 6 on my brand new
Thinkpad T60P laptop. I already have a Linux desktop computer using the
Speakup modified Fedora 6, Gnome and Orca, etc. Unfortunately, my
Thinkpad doesn't have an onboard serial port built into the system. I
am wondering if Speakup would recognize my Dectalk Express hooked up to
either the docking station, which does have a serial port, or the
serial/parallel port bay adapter that I also purchased for this
computer. The adapter fits into the ultrabay, you remove the DVD drive
and put the adapter into the bay instead. I could probably install
Linux in graphical mode only using Gnome and Orca, but I would like to
have Speakup for use in text mode work and for the flexibility that
having Speakup access would provide for me. Having Speakup available
would of course allow me to install Linux independently, also a very
important factor for me!! I know I can use Speakup with software
synthesizers and speech dispatcher, but I need to get it installed
first.<smile>
Any thoughts or information anyone has on this issue would be most

Hello, As far as installing Fedora 6 remotely, you can do so using telnet. i.e. if you have access to another Windows box (better yet, a Linux box) you can do so via telnet. Windows however would not be the best choice, as cursor control is broken as far as Jaws/Window Eyes is. If you go through the archives, their have actually been posts on this very subject. As I currently don't use Fedora (most of the machines are running some flavor of Sid), I can't speak from personal experience. Hello Erik and all, Thanks for your message. Yes, I have seen the messages about installing Fedora via Telnet, that is definitely an option to consider. As I am using this laptop for work and school purposes, I may need to use the Dectalk express with Speakup as well as speakup using software, this is all an experiment so far, I haven't really figured everything out yet. Hello, Bare in mind that the Dectalk Express driver may have bugs in it. I'm not even sure if its available in the stable Orca tree. As far as Orca's concerned, its not available in Sid yet. Looking at the status of Gnome in Experimental, it looks like to me that All the Gnome 2.16 stuff is built for Amd64. Since I don't have access to an Amd64 box at present (Sparc64 I do), its not available to me even in Experimental. However, when it does become available in Unstable, I'd be more than willing to post a little review for any of you who may be interested in it. From what I've heard of in Forefox 3 betas, it looks very promissing for what's coming down the pike. You could also try using the install CD through a serial console, as this is meant to work with USB to serial devices (and I assume other serial devices not built in). I remember when I wanted to look at freebsd as an OS, I was able to install that in such a way (it was just a shame that whenever it tried to use the network card it crashed the machine). I don't know if the Fedora installation kernel has serial console support, hopefully it would. Hi, Beth: I don't know about the docking station serial port, but if it registers as /dev/ttyS0, or some such, you should be OK. Of course, you may not know about this until after you've installed Linux on your Thinkpad. I would suggest you can accessibly install FC6 using speech on a second computer, probably your desktop. You need to have both machines connected over tcp/ip networking, and then you can use telnet from the desktop to the Thinkpad to install FC6 on the Thinkpad. Janina PS: Congrats on getting the 60. I have a laptop, and I have tried several versions of Linux to try and boot to software speech, so I can access a hidden drive on my laptop, but neither distro allowed me to access my sound card. As far as having to attempt to dual-boot and machine, it seems that someone should really about serious effort into writing a USB driver at it has been noted on this list before the days of a serial ports, are just numbered much like attempting to find a machine with a serial port and realizing that the only way to get it if either getting an old machine or special ordering a new one and really paying for it. Hello to everyone, Thank you Janina, Steve, Rick, and others who responded to my questions about the Thinkpad. I've been playing with the new computer and so I'm a bit behind in my email.<smile> Tomorrow I'm going to try to install using two Linux machines as Janina and others have suggested while I'm at school. I have a Linux desktop there that I use, and that way I can get someone to read a screen or two for me to make sure I don't blow up anything.<smile> I've installed Fedora several times on my home desktop machine just fine, but this will be the first time I've tried a dual boot system. I'll be trying the VMware solution too as suggested by Steve because it sounds cool and because it might help to know these things while I am seeking employment. I started out with VMWare and Ubuntu as a virtual machine on my laptop. It slows to a crawl even with a high end system. From my personal experience I would just go with the dual boot setup, which is the way I'm using it now. The computer is much more responsive this way. I've been playing with the new computer and so I'm a bit behind in my email.<smile> Tomorrow I'm going to try to install using two Linux machines as Janina and others have suggested while I'm at school. I have a Linux desktop there that I use, and that way I can get someone to read a screen or two for me to make sure I don't blow up anything.<smile> I've installed Fedora several times on my home desktop machine just fine, but this will be the first time I've tried a dual boot system. I'll be trying the VMware solution too as suggested by Steve because it sounds cool and because it might help to know these things while I am seeking employment. You're keeping a Win installation that came on your Thinkpad? That can be done, certainly, but your first task may be to determine what hard drive space you have available for Linux. If you're going to do a native installation as opposed to only a vmware under Win, you may well need to free some space for Linux. For instance, you may well need to shrink some existing partition to create sufficient space for Linux. PS: I would also strongly suggest you create at least three partitions when you get to that point in the installation: 1.) A / partition of at least10-12 Gb, and preferably more like 16Gb. 2.) A swap partition of twice your RAM. 3.) Give the rest of the space you free for Linux to your /home. Guidance on doing a talking install over telnet is available at: https://www.redhat.com/archives/blinux-list/2005-August/msg00038.html Note that there is an error in this post. The correct way to specify the particular ethernet device is something like ksdevice=eth0 or better with your actual mac address like ksdevice=aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff Good luck! Hi , To my knowledge, the only reasonably stable method of using the Dec Express with Orca is through the Emacspeak speech services driver. It's slightly sluggish this way, but not so much as to make it unusable or even that annoying. To make that work, you'll just need to yum for the latest version of Emacspeak. You'll then see the choice for Emacspeak speech services in the speech system combo box in the speech tab of the preferences dialog. Still, that doesn't address the practical aspects of getting the system installed in the first place. The telnet idea is indeed a good one, and while I haven't played with the Fedora live CD, I know that in theory at least you can use the graphical installer and Orca to install the system. As to whether Speakup or Emacspeak would work with the serial port on the docking station or other device, I really couldn't say. My only experience with a "nonstandard" serial device is with a USB to serial adapter and it doesn't work with Speakup. Oddly enough, haven't tried it with Orca yet. Maybe I'll go do that now, smile.
