Hello everyone.
I would like to install fc4, and I understand that I need to install a
speakup modified kernel after installing fc4.
Does anyone know the files I need to obtain, and how to install them?
Thanks,
Jeremy

Janina,
Do you have a yum repo tree on
speakupmodified.org
If not, it may not be a bad idea, because then all the user would need
to do is a yum -y upgrade and the kernels would be picked up.
That is of course once the user has added the speakup.repo to their
/etc/yum.repo.d directory.
If you would like some assistance setting this up, I would be glad to
help out.

Hi, Steven:
SpeakupModified.Org is just my $10 that says I got tired of typing
http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/fedora. If you watch the messages
when you load the uri, you'll notice it's just an Apache redirect.

Sean,
Take a look at a *.repo file found in /etc/yum.repos.d/
In this file you will see a line that starts with
mirrorlist =
This is where you put a list of ftp://, http://, or file:// entries.
This is where yum is made aware of the locations of the many repositories.
man yum will tell you lots of good stuff. There is also some good howto
information. google yum howto and you will find lots.

That helps. I didn't know if yum had a more automated way of picking the mirror
then simply han simply editing by hand. I didn't to rtfm yum because I figured
this type of functionality was a seperate program but I'll go do that
thanks

I see people talking about fc4 while I'm downloading fc3. I did hear that
fc4 didn't come with speakup. Would I be able to install it on top of fc3
which does come with speakup without affecting speakup?

No. You can choose to do an upgrade rather than a new install, but this
is a choice you make during the installation of FC4, and we still do not
have Speakup Modified FC4 installation images.
To install FC4 you must do something like use telnet for the
installation:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/blinux-list/2005-August/msg00038.html
Once FC4 is installed, Speakup Modified kernel rpms are available.

Does this mean that if I do this upgrade I will have no speech until I

To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
The FC3 installation provides speech support during installation. There
is no Speakup Modified Fc4, therefore no speech support during
installation of FC4--and, as ytou note, not speech from an FC4
installation until such time as you upgrade the kernel to a Speakup
Modified kernel.
Obviously, blind users are unlikely to install without speech support,
hence the notion of using telnet as per my previous message.

Hi Jeremy,
I can tell you that if you go to ftp://ftp.linux-speakup.org and then
go to /pub/speakup/disks/fedora/4. This then brings you in to the
list which shows rpms and srpms. If you are not familiar with srpms I
would suggest that you ask about them. As I understand it srpms are
development rpms. However, you want to go to the rpm section. In here
you need to identify what type of system you have. For example, if you
have a 586 that I believe is a lower Pentium machine but if you have a
686 that is I believe current. I can't tell you though how to install
them because I have some questions myself which I will attach here.
First, is the Speakup modified kernel ready to rock and roll for
software speech. My other question is the saqme as yours how does
this rpm get installed I know it is something like: rpm blank but not
sure of the syntax. Original message:
