Well, a lot folks don't agree with me, but I find the linksys wrt54G
to be exactly what I need.
Others have had problems with them, but I have not.
My friend much prefers the belkin routers, so there's something else
for what it's worth.

Just a note on ddwrt/openwrt on the wrt54s, if you're going to increase
the power on the wireless NIC or overclock the processor as supported by
certain models, you have to watch the temps...anything over the stock
settings seems to cause them to heat up quite a bit, and a heatsync or
fan should be added if you want to leave them in this state for any
length of time.

Most likely. I'm not sure of any other reason they would want to
overclock them...increasing the transmition power of the wireless
hardware is another story, would be nice to have the full 251mw that's
supported by the device as opposed to the 80-100mw it's limitted to
with the stock firmware.

I don't know about anyone else, but I want my linux
behind a router/firewall that does nat, then also run
iptables on linux. There are many people looking for
linux boxen to play with on the net. They look for
known vulnerabilities and old versions of networking
software that don't have the latest security patches.
A canned router does not have ability to do things
like login, install rootkits, open rogue connections,
etc. Even if you don't open ports and follow all of
the best security practices, eventually you will
forget something, or not have the latest patch, or
maybe you already have a rootkit installed and do
not know. Reason enough for me, and besides a
router is just as cheap as a wireless adapter to
make a PC into router.

After my venerable linksys befw11s4 started losing it this past weekend, I
received just yesterday my new linksys WRT54GL, which came highly
recommended, and so far, I am quite impressed. The latest firmware is
4.30.9, but I understand that there's lots of GPL tweaks and such that are
available for this router.

Openwrt seems to be the firmware for the wrt54 with the most
features/support...ddwrt is another firmware that has the advantage of
more complete support for the wrt54gv5, which openwrt is only starting
to support.

does support it? How does it work? Do you have to get cvs stuff? Where

Information on the v5 is somewhere on ddwrt's website...forget
where...there's also a little info on openwrt's site, but openwrt
support for those is still in development and I think only the most
basic openwrt image will fit in the 2mb flash they give you.

You should get a linksys or what ever it was. It can be easily used as a lan
provider and also as a wireless network provider. My laptop and pc are using
the same connection, but only the pc is using the cable.

I would recommend the wrt54gl, the reason being that you can reflash it with
openwrt (http://www.openwrt.org) and get ssh access/iptables firewall
access. I've got two of these with OpenWrt and a decent firewall
configuration, and have had no problems.

I have a question about openwrt. I have a linux box that needs to go out on
the Internet and I am getting two wrt54G v2 routers. Is there a way in
Openwrt to allow only a certain ip address on to the Internet without
actually letting all the other systems hang out on the Net. I forget the
actual term it is something like Nat forwarding or redirection.

I found the D-Link 713 a good router, and it has a serial port, for a
dial-up modem, but I only used mine for Ethernet/broadband.
It has a very accessible web interface, much more so than the D-Link 714P
that I now have.
It is wireless, with 4 ports for cable, one being the line-in, and 3 out, or
it was 4 out, but it seems like 3.
