Can any RH users recommend a program to wrip CDS?

I have a book that is on cd that I'd like to wrip from CDA format to MP3
or OGG format.

Well, if you only want to rely on programs that come with RH, you have a 
few choices. cdda2wav is a program that can rip tracks into wav files. It, 
however, has no jitter or error correction. cdparanoia is another ripper 
that comes with rh, the one I use. It has error/jitter correction and works 
well on all cdrom drives that can extract digital audio, which most drives 
can. The only ones that can't do this are very old. Cdparanoia, too, rips 
tracks to wav files.
As for abcd being a "debian application," this is not strictly true. It is 
a debian package, meaning it's been prepackaged for debian. But if you 
wanted to, you could locate its homepage (which I can't remember at the 
moment), grab the source, and compile it. You would then have it running on 
RH. Alternative, you can try searching on:
http://rpmfind.net
and see if someone has compiled an rpm for your system. Keep in mind that 
abcd is an interface to other programs, a front-end to a ripper and an 
encoder of your choice.

Something like abcde puts all the steps together for you. but there's really no
problem with using cdparanoia to make the .wav files and then oggenc (at least
that's the one I use in debian) to make .ogg files or lame (or whatever else you
have) to make mp3 files.

ACB request for bids on SAMBA network setup.

	The American Council of the blind is seeking a blind person expert 
in SAMBA to remotely install and configure the software to allow our 
national office to perform the following tasks:

	*  Have our previous logical drives ported to the Linux machine so 
that we can read and write to the files used previously for our data 
storage.  This means the ability of any user to retrieve files from the 
server by accessing them with either Windows or DOS applications from their 
local machines and either saving or copying the files back to the server 
for safe keeping.  An employee may run a database application from their 
local machine and want to share that resulting files with others.  It is 
not necessary that the modified file be directly written to on the network 
as much as it can be copied there for others to access.  The same holds 
true for word processed files.  the only application which is important to 
access the data files (DBF) from the network and write back to them is the 
office calendar.  This program allows the user to enter their daily hours 
and activities for report generation of all office staff at the end of the 
month.  This is a DOS application which ideally would reside on the server 
but could be made local to each machine with the data file on the server 
pointed to by the program.

	*  We will need to use the printer services and copier from our 
windows machines through the network to the printers and copier.  This 
means running a Windows application or DOS and have the printers available 
for printing.  

	*  Our INTERNET services will also run through the Linux machine 
through a separate NIC for use with electronic mail and other web access.  
Users will be using their own electronic mail programs from their local 
machines such as outlook express and Eudora.  

	Persons interested in performing this task should send electronic 
mail to Charlie Crawford at CCrawford@ACB.org with an estimated price and 
time frame for completion of the work.  The Linux machine to be used for 
this purpose will be installed this week.

I suggest  using another machine as a firewall.  I wouldn't be
completely comfortable putting the main data server directly on the
Internet, but that's just me.

This is very sound advice.

You could purchase a machine dedicated as a firewall for < $100 that would
be more than adequate.

to make the mp3 files.  Use cdparanoia --help to get the parmaters.

Someone has written a perl sdcript called rip (cannot remember the web
page, but it's linked from the lame page, in the software that uses Lame
section).  It is a front end to paranoia and your choice of bladeemc, Lame
or Oggenc, and very nice it is too.

p.s. I just looked at the site, I did get the url correct.  It seems that
the latest version, which I don't have, also has support for the new FLAC
audio compression, oh yes and I forgot, for ripping those music cds, it
also calls cddb to get the track info.

Ripping CDSHi, I use the cdparanoia package which comes with RH to wrip cd's to wav, and then use lame to encode them as mp3 format.
  If you want a lame rpm package I have one which installs to RH 8 and 9.

I've been very happy with a Perl script called crip. I had to get and
install several Perl modules to get it working, but it's doing the job
for me right now. It also supports vorbisgain which is pretty cool and
yields pleasant results when listening to many tracks.
