Actually, the best package of codecs to get is the essential codecs 
package.  It contains all the codecs for stuff that Mplayer can't do 
itself.

With all my experimenting with mplayer, I seem to have the "essential" 
package of 22 MB in /usr/local/lib/codecs, no longer being used, and the 
win32codec package of 30 MB in /usr/lib/win32, where it is being used by 
my running mplayer. The sizes would suggest that the win32 set is the 
more inclusive, but the web site urges the use of "essential." What 
would you recommend? If I just copy essential over the top of win32 I 
might possibly lose something, plus the next time win32 is updated I 
might also lose something.

Hi.
I think this might be a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

I use the win32 codecs, but I need them so my Gnome player can also play
Real audio and Windows Media.

Now, does anybody know a consistent way of getting around things like 
streamaudio. I think what happens is that instead of the url taking one 
directly to the audio feed you get into a file that does things like check 
your speed and set some features. Sometimes you can find the actual url 
for the audio feed but sometimes you can't. If anybody has found a way to 
do this, I'd be interested in hearing about it. There are other setups 
like streamaudio but streamaudio is the one I've been encountering a lot 
lately. an example would be:

Freedombox isn't successful with these either.

The link you provided delivers the following file with "wget", and in
this file are a bunch of .wmv streams that work. You can pull the urls
out of this file if you wish.

The name of the file I attached was changed from the one delivered by

Yeah, I find mplayer to be quite snappy when pressing the various
keystrokes too.  I just wish I could get better control of what is
shown on screen.  For day to day use, I'm only interested in file
title information and sampling/bit rates.  Is there any way to get the
tag info? I do see a way to bring up sampling and encoding info with
the -identify option but -identify doesn't read id3 and vorbis comment information:(.

Thanks Chuck.
and, taking this a step further and simpler, for other stations I have now 
tried that are streamaudio, you can do:
mplayer -playlist http://www.streamaudio.com/stations/asx
and then append your station call letters all in caps then an underscore 
sign and am in caps and .asx
For example:
mplayer -playlist http://www.streamaudio.com/stations/asx/CFMJ_AM.asx
Also just did it with an fm station and of course you just use _FM instead 
of _AM.
Don't know if there may be other files 
that aren't asx that you could reach. Don't know if this formula holds for 
all streamaudio or how long it will remain so but this is great!!!

The -playlist flag will work with .m3u playlists as well.  For example, it 
works with ACB's radio Main Menu archives.  As to the questions about 
showing tags, Mplayer seems to be incapable of showing tags in OGG vorbis 
files, but will show them in MP3 files.  The -quiet and -really-quiet 
options will lessen the output of Mplayer.  You can set defaults with the 
file .mplayer/config in your home directory.  The man page briefly 
explains this.  I have mine including the line "cache=1024" because I find 
that streaming audio from slower web sites works better with this as the 
default.  My only complaints about Mplayer are that I wish it would 
automatically recognize playlists without requiring the -playlist flag, 
and I wish that, when you paused and unpaused playback, the status line 
would pick up where it left off rather than drawing a new status line. 
What I mean is that you will still have the previous status line which 
will be stopped where you paused the audio.  You could press the space bar 
several times and have a screen full of old status lines.

If you are trying to launch Mplayer from within Lynx, I'd suggest editing
your .mailcap so that application/mpegurl is mapped to "mplayer -playlist
%s."  I.E.
 
audio/mpegurl; mplayer -playlist %s
audio/x-mpegurl; mplayer -playlist %s

This seems to work for me.

Well, got it to work at least with the one url; haven't tried others. but I'm
not sure I'd advise using the debian installer. for one thing, it appeared to
try to install alsa on me which I didn't want, and I'm not at all sure the
installer was doing all that needed to be done as I couldn't play anything when
I used it to install mplayer.
I stil will probably have to look over the packages and reinstall; for one
thing, the ./configure for the main mplayer package said there wasn't support
for oggvorbis which I do have but maybe the path in debian is different or
something. At any rate, I'm getting further by just installing the individual
packages than I did by using the installer.

Hmmm, can you tell me what configure options you used?  I can't get .asx
streams to work, it keeps moaning that the file is not an url, which is of
course rubbish because it's fed directly to it, and I even used mailcap
files in Lynx.

I didn't use any special configure options. I just followed step-by-step the
guide that Johann gave in March onlist. You can find it in the speakup archives.

Hi. It seems that you don't have either Alsasound or oss 
installed? You will have to install one of these before 
you can use audio support. And in terms of xlib6g, this 
is one of the many xwindows libraries. It will be needed 
for video playback whenever you wish to play video and 
audio. I just got them because I thought that I might 
watch movies under X with friends in the future, so its 
good to have it now rather than later. As far as I know, 
the files mentioned in Johann's guide are still 
applicable. Hope this helps.

Hi.
Actually I don't need alsasound because I do have oss. I think that somehow the
debian installer was either trying to install alsa or found some remnants of it
on my system and with both alsa and commerical oss trying to work, neither was
working quite right. I recompiled manually, without the debian installer, and
got rid of all alsa files, and now I am able to play .asx files.

other than mplayer.
