Okay, I give up! I would appreciate a tip or two from someone on this
issue.

A long time ago I installed X, but never managed to make it run on this
new system, using an Intel 945G motherboard. The video section could
not be made to work. I let it go without pursuing the problem at that
time.

But now I want to try reconfiguring it, and every way I can think of to
try reconfiguring will only ask me trivial questions, none of which
deal with the details of the video configuration, as it did on the
first installation. What I have tried, essentially, is this:

dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg

I have tried other priorities too, besides high, but am only asked
about using a frame buffer, yes or no, and a half dozen questions
about my keyboard. That's it.

What must I do to start this puppy over again?

Thanks,
Chuck

(II) intel(0): Output VGA disconnected
(EE) intel(0): No valid modes.

It looks like the driver doesn't like that no actual screen is
connected. You should probably send this log to xorg@freedesktop.org
and see with them.

Or alternatively, if you really do not need any output, use the
xserver-xorg-video-dummy driver.

My mail to freedesktop was rejected, I am not authorized to post there.
I guess I have to join the list first.

However, I really have no need whatever for video, this system does not
even have a monitor attached. So how do I ask for the
xserver-xorg-video-dummy driver if I cannot make dpkg-reconfigure work
for me?

Can it be added by hand to xorg.conf? If so, where?

hmm, I keep my monitor off all the time and have no such problems --
maybe he needs to specify some reasonable horizontal and vertical
refresh rates or something.

Tyler,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I get essentially the same error when
run with the xorg.conf generated that way. The logs are not identical,
but they both end with a failure to find a usable screen.

I can verify this. Xorg has a builtin assumption of an actual monitor.
Of course it shouldn't, but I guess some concepts are foreign to some
developers. I mean, who would run X without a monitor? <grin>

So, the bug should probably recommend that the dummy driver be used (or
offered for use) when an actual monitor isn't found. Certainly, it
should error out so mysteriously for such a prosaic reason.

The debian xulrunner testsuite does for instance, by using Xvfb as I
suggested later.

AXAPITA! (ain't X a PITA)

Thanks. Sounds like perhaps a simple solution. Now all I need is a
monitor.

Or to use the dummy driver, or to throw some hand vertical & horizontal
refresh rates, as suggested on the list.

# dpkg-reconfigure desktop

...is the command you probably want. The "desktop" package was
installed via the 'tasksel' program during the installation, and should
be what you're looking for.
run 'tasksel --list-tasks' for more info on packages that were installed
during installation, and don't run the "new installation" option if you
don't want your kernel removed. <winks>

Here's what that gives:

cq:~# dpkg-reconfigure desktop
Package `desktop' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: desktop is not installed
cq:~# aptitude show desktop
E: Unable to locate package desktop
cq:~#

The real problem seems to be the absence of anything plugged into the
video socket on my back panel.

This is a Debian Sid installation, 2.6.24 kernel.

	Alright. After a 'dpkg -l | grep "desktop"', I get a new
package mentioned...desktop-base.  You can try:

# dpkg-reconfigure desktop-base

...and see if you get the real configuration screen to come back up.
debconf controls so much in debian, it's hard to tweak most things
without breaking something, or having your configs over-written these
days.. I'm thinking of going to LFS and stripping everything back down
to bedrock linux.

Michael,

Thanks for your ideas, but to return to my original problem, it is the
xserver-xorg base that does not run for me. It has nothing to do with a
desktop. Every desktop will require a running X to be present first,
and that is what I cannot make happen here. Others have commented on
this, and it seems that xorg insists on a physical monitor connected to
the system in order to be configured. I have no monitor. Well, okay, I
do, but it is not convenient to connect it to this boxat the moment.

I have too much to lose here by following leads that do not seem
relevant to my primary issue. At the moment I'm pursuing Samuel's
suggestion about xvfb and the xvfb-run script, which appear more
promising.

Once X is running, I'll worry about configuring a desktop.

Chuck

This is just a guess but i think you need to reconfigure debconf. Maybe you
have it configured to ask only mmedium questions.

# dpkg-reconfigure debconf
<select  low priority>
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Hi, John.

I selected low priority for debconf, and also readline, but
reconfiguring xserver-xorg produced the same short list of questions,
nothing about video or monitors. I think the consensus has developed
that the absence of a physical monitor connected to my system is the
key. I haven't had a chance to test that yet, the only monitor here is
on my wife's computer, and that's off limits <smile>

It usually asks you what kind of monitor and if you select advanced
somewhere you can select the horizontal and vertical refresh rates. I
suppose you could do it by hand as well. I can't imagine why those
questions are not asked, debconf hasno idea whether you have a monitor
or not.

Hi Chuck, John and everyone interested in this thread,

Just wondering, Chuck, did you find a solution to your problem?

I have a similar problem here, except that I have a monitor connected. After the initial installation of Debian Sid (now kernel v 2.6.26) the xserver/gdm/gnome/etcetera all worked fine. After a "aptitude sae-upgrade", the xserver was updated and has not worked since.

On examining the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, it appears that the definition for my monitor is missing/incorrect.
On initial installation, and on other systems, it identifies my monitorcorrectly, a Sony GDM-500ps.

Now this Debian sid system has:
X.Org X Server 1.4.2
Release Date: 11 June 2008
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0

I have tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, as suggested, with low priority enabled, but it only askes for input re keyboard, nothing about the monitor or mouse.

I have also installed the 'xdebconfigurator' package that should update the configuration on reboot, but no joy.

If you have found a solution, could you please share it?

	TIA,

	--terry

Hi, Terry,

That's interesting. I have put the problem on a back burner for now,
and have nothing new to report. I played a bit with xvfb but then other
problems came along requiring my attention, so the xorg.conf issue was
put aside. I have dropped off the Debian user list due to excessive
traffic, so I don't know what the chatter is about this issue.
