Using speakup and emacspeak together

Hi guys. On a laptop here I'm wanting to use software speech in linux so I 
don't have to carry the synth around with me all the time and the only 
option I have is emacspeak. When I'm home I'd like to be able to use both 
speakup and emacspeak since speakup is my first choice for accessing linux 
and emacspeak I could od while on the road.
Also being able to use both would be a plus o that I could learn emacspeak 
and still have access to speakup.
Anybody have a setup like this going and any pointers to where I should 
startto learn this other method?

Tom,

I had both for a time, and may do so again.  What I found work best was to 
have two kernels, identical in all ways but one.  One kernel had Speakup 
patched in, the other did not.  I had them on floppies, but you could use 
loadlin, lilo, whatever.  A warning:  When running Emacspeak, be sure the 
Speakup keymap isn't getting loaded.  For that matter, and perhaps more 
important, be sure your Speakup key map loads when you're running Speakup.

Hi, as for Emacspeak itself you can find all that you need at

They have new howtos, manuals, and installation guides going up for
Emacspeak 15.
 Emacspeak seams to work fine under Red Hat 7.1, but Haven't gotten it
working properly under Red hat 7.2. Not yet sure why.
If anyone actually has figured out a way to have both Emacspeak and Speakup
going let me know. It seams wherever I have 'Speakup on Emacspeak doesn't
work properly.

Thanks for the tip.
Also I forgot to mention that at home here I'd like to learn emacspeak 
with the litetalk so I'm not sure how to get that one to work with 
emacspeak neither. I did it once a long time ago but don't know how I 
should do this since the kernel I have has speakup patched in.
Should I do the same thing as the suggestion you gave to me for the laptop 
on the desktop as well?

If you're referring to the kernel suggestion, yes, do the same on both 
machines.

Regarding the lite talk, you might want to look at the additional speech 
servers for Emacspeak.  I think the latest one is "emacspeak-ss0.7".  It's 
available in a source 'rpm', but I recommend the "tar.gz".  The "rpm" has 
never worked right for me.

Anyway, Assuming you've put the speech servers into the correct place, set 
the environment variable "DTK_PROGRAM" to "doubletalk", and set "DTK_PORT" 
to the port on which your synth is connected, if it's somewhere other than 
the first serial port.  Jim Vanzandt, the author of the servers, has 
written a pretty good 'README' for these.  

A final note:

Before any of this will work, make sure the packages "tcl" and "tcls" are 
installed.

spam question

Have any one else on this list gotten a spam e-mail from
"hopeyou@getrich.com" ?  The from: and the to: all say
hopeyou@getrich.com.  It's puzzling the fire out of me as to how it wound
up in my mailbox when it was mailed to hopeyou@getrich.com.  I use pine as
my e-mail program and this spam does not indicate with the + sign that it
was an e-mail sent directly to my address as suppose to the list.  I'm
assuming that it may be posted to this or another list.  This is the first
time that I have had this happen to me.  I've had spam before, but they
were either mailed to the list or to my personal e-mail address.  I used
to never get spam, but over the last few months it's slowly creeping in to
the tune of one a week.
	Maybe some of you folks on the list are smart enough to keep out
the spam.  I hate to have to change my e-mail address if this spams grows
like a virus.  I hope there's a way to stop this before it gets out of
control.  Thanks in advance for any tips that can keep the e-mail traffic
clear.

Other than manually typing loadkeys us.map or loadkeys speakup.map how can
one ensure htat the right kernel is being loaded?

They might be using the Bcc: field or there may be a way to embed your
address in the envelope area as is done by list software. I also wonder if
Pine's + sign applies to Bcc as well as CC header fields.

Another note about this spam stuff, It is worth a try to expand the
headers with pine's h command and see where the mail originated from. Once
this is found, then forward the mail with headers expanded to
abuse@<provider> where provider is the originating source. I've
successfully stopped some spam this way. Unfortunately, some spam gets
here without *ANYTHING* in the headers. God knows how that got here but I
couldn't do anything with that one. Also, simply ignoring them eventually
works too unless it got so out of hand that ignoring isn't bareable.

You don't need to have two kernels to achieve this. Simply use an 
"append=speakup_synth=[your.synth.keyword]" to distinguish two entries 
pointing to the same kernel in your lilo.conf to accomplish the same 
result. Much more elegant and far easier to maintain.

Hi, has  anyone successfully tried Janina's suggestion with Grub?
For technical reasons my large hard drive needs Grub to boot properly, and
I've been trying to find a good way to multiboot kernels with it.
